This time there will be no waking up in the middle of the night and returning to work with a stunned face from little sleep, the America’s Cup returns to TV and will do so starting in September on Mediaset Channels 5 and 20, free-to-air and live .
No sleepless nights we said, because the America’s Cup will be in Barcelona in 2024, but it is already starting with the 2023 World Series, the Vilanova i La Geltrù regattas scheduled for Sept. 14-17 and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Nov. 29-Dec. 2. This will be an opportunity to observe the new television format and the landing of the America’s Cup sailing on Mediaset, a first of its kind.
America’s Cup on TV
The America’s Cup, like any sport but even more so in the case of sailing, needs TV to fuel the public’s passion. In Italy, the first broadcaster to bet on the Cup was Tele Montecarlo, which broadcast the Moro di Venezia races in 1992. Then came RAI, which in 2000 offered major coverage of the America’s Cup in Auckland where Luna Rossa’s dream was born, coverage that was repeated for the 2003 edition.
Instead, in 2007, LA 7 entered the scene, which, with an unprecedented conduction by the Cecinelli-Bontempelli pair, narrated with quality an edition that went down in history as the most numerous in terms of participating boats. In the intervening years, abetted by the advent of the Larry Ellison and Oracle era, the Cup on TV effectively never returned, at least for free and in Italy, until the 2020-2021 edition. This time it was RAI, free and unencrypted, and SKY, for a fee, that broadcast the races.
America’s Cup – What the teams are doing
We told you in the interview with Marco Gradoni how the young Italian helmsman is experiencing the challenge. In the meantime, Luna Rossa has moved to Barcelona with the sailing team and is finalizing base preparation. For the Italian crew immediately a scuff in the first training outing with the AC 40 in Spanish water.
For Luna Rossa and all the other teams on the horizon there are many hours of training with the 40 that will be the boat used in the World Series, as well as by the women’s crew and the Young crew.
