It goes into the archives, after 6 completed races over 4 days, the Italian ORC in Marina di Carrara that awarded the offshore sailing championships. In both classes, A+B and C, the title was awarded at the last round, and in both cases there was no shortage of surprises.
ORC Italian Championship – Blue Sky wins group A
Battle night in the big group, with Swan 45 and 42 being the big voice in the standings. Before the last race, the Swan 42 Fantaghirò seemed to be the master of its own fate, with a small lead over its pursuers.
Simonelli’s 42 ran into a 5 in the last race, however, while Claudio Terrieri’s Swan 45 Blue Sky won the last race to go on to win the title. Rounding out the podium “surprisingly,” but not too surprisingly, is Marcello Focosi’s Grand Soleil 43 Faster, which ousts the highly favored Swan 42 Mela from the podium.
ORC Italian Championship – Guardamago’s gush in Group B
The eve’s favorites seemed to be the Corsa 915, Sugar and Farfallina, but the prediction was overturned and once again the boats to beat in the small group proved to be the Italia Yachts. Enzo De Blasio’s Scugnizza and Massimo Piparo’s Guardamago(read our interview with the owner) battled it out in a weeklong match race.
At the end of which Guardamago came out on top by only one point, although Scugnizza went on to win the last round. Behind the two Italia Yacht 11.98s is the X-35 Trottolina Bellikosa, which had won the first race and remained in the podium area all week.
