What better opportunity to spend some time in the world’s most beautiful city on water and perhaps, leaving a little early, enjoy the Redentore fireworks display, the “New Year’s Eve” of Venetians. A week before the VELA Cup, Venice celebrates the most traditional holiday there is, to commemorate the end of the plague epidemic of 1575-1577. Boats of all ages, sizes and shapes fill St. Mark’s Basin for an evening, which is transformed into a large bay where everyone parties together while waiting for midnight. The following weekend (July 22-23) we repeat, in a small way, with the VELA Cup, the most fun regatta ever!
All the stages of the VELA Cup 2023
- May 26 / 28 – VELA Cup Toscana / VELAFestival
- June 3 / 4 – VELA Cup Brindisi
- June 24 / 25 – VELA Cup Magdalena
- July 22 / 23 – VELA Cup Venice
- August 19 / 20 – VELA Cup Costa Smeralda

The VELA Cup Venice
On Saturday, July 22, we take you sailing to exclusive, unique places. Departure and arrival are on the island of St. George, in front of St. Mark’s Square, and then edged along a long path that circumnavigates the Venice Lido, the most glamorous island in the lagoon, where even today Hollywood stars still visit every summer to walk the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival.

The regatta is open to all boats, of all sizes and shapes, with no age restrictions, no red tape or technical complications, and with rankings based on length. First come, first served wins! There are prizes for (almost) everyone, including last place. It is up to each entrant to choose whether to participate in Sport Boat category , being able to use spinnaker, gennaker and code 0, or Cruising Boat, with white sails. You do not have to be a sailing champion to participate, nor do you have to have a planing hull and carbon sails. Finally, big news this year, the new Classic Boat category, in which all those boats that are at least 25 years old will be automatically entered, even if they are mass-built and made of fiberglass.
In the evening, as per tradition, once the regatta is over, big party ashore, with awards ceremony for the winners and raffle, entertainment and games on the water, food and music for all.
The Redeemer by boat in Venice
The Feast of the Redeemer (July 15-17) is among the most heartfelt festivities for Venetians, in which the religious and spectacular aspects coexist. On Saturday night, fireworks attract thousands of visitors: plays of light and reflections on the inimitable stage of St. Mark’s Basin trace a kaleidoscope of colors that stand out behind the city’s spires, domes and bell towers.
It is an occasion to remember the end of the terrible plague epidemic that struck Venice between 1575 and 1577. The Redentore, the “famosissima” night as Venetians colloquially call it, is an integral part of the customs of the inhabitants of the lagoon city who continue to renew, even today, the gastronomic traditions, folklore and celebrations handed down by their ancestors that have made, over the years, this “Venetianissima” festival also known internationally as well as one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions.
