There was the history and present of Italian sailing at Portopiccolo in the bay of Sistiana (Trieste) at the 21st edition of the Grand Soleil Cup, the event that brings together all owners of the models built, over half a century, by Cantiere Del Pardo. That’s right, 50 years, because the 2023 edition comes in the year the shipyard celebrates an important milestone: 50 years in business, which started back in 1973 with Finot’s Grand Soleil 34.
Grand Soleil Cup, who was there in Portopiccolo
Fifty-seven boats took part in the great Portopiccolo sailing festival: all owners of Italian nationality except for two Polish crews.
The Grand Soleil Cup 2023 featured all the models that have made the Grand Soleil brand famous in its 50-year history: from the GS34, Finot’s first signature model (out of the box at the time, short deckhouse and huge stern, was a huge success, with 300 examples and a production run of 11 years), at the GS39 and the GS46 by Alain Jezequel; the GS 50 by Peterson, from cult models-designed by German Frers-the GS42, by owner Roberto Cabrini with the great Mauro Pelaschier at the helm for the occasion, the GS45 and GS52 up to the latest additions the GS40 and GS44 by Matteo Polli and Nauta Design.
Regatta in perfect condition
The first race, held in the late morning of Saturday, June 24, saw Bora from 15 to 20 knots of perfect intensity to put all crews at ease; while in the second race, held on Sunday, it ranged from 10 to 15 knots, optimal weather conditions that allowed for steady sailing.
The start featured all crews, who were then divided into two categories, “All Sails” and “White Sails” (the White Sails sailed only with white sails while the All Sails also used headsails such as gennaker, Code 0 and spinnaker). For each category, in addition to first place overall, first place overall Vintage was then awarded for projects prior to 2000.
Grand Soleil Cup 2023, the winners
Taking overall victory in the All Sails classification was the GS48 Race – Marco Lostuzzi’s project – Sergio Taccheo’s Athyris while the first step of the White Sails podium featured the GS 52 LC – also by Lostuzzi – Fabio Montanari’s Liuba.
Among the Vintage winners, Federico Tognetti with his GS52 Maya – a German Frers design – took first place overall All Sails, imitated by Lady liner – a GS 46.3 J&J design – from the Mirnik Yacht Club who dominated in the White Sails category.
It was a two-day celebration at sea and ashore, an ongoing celebration of life at sea and sportsmanship, because the Grand Soleil Cup is not only a sailing event, it is also an important time of sharing for the entire Grand Soleil community.
