Forty years ago, on June 18, 1983, an Italian boat for the first time participated in the America’s Cup. The boat was called Azzurra and in the waters of Newport in the U.S. won the first race immediately, beating the French France III.
It was the first victory in a long series that took Azzurra all the way to the challengers’ semifinals. The four boats were Australia II, Azzurra, Victory 83 (UK) and Canada I.
Azzurra and Canada I exited the scene, and from there Australia II built victory in the 25th America’s Cup. Historic victory because it was the first time since 1851 that the U.S. lost the America’s Cup, which, indeed, was won in 1983 by Australia II.
The protagonists of Azure meet for dinner.
To celebrate that legendary Azzurra’s first victorious race, a reenactment dinner was held on June 18 at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda attended by many of the key players who were on board and who contributed ashore to the Italian boat’s success.
