5 Memorable Classic Boats from 11.35 to 11.89 m
With this penultimate episode on the Classic Boat of Historical Value by Journal of Sailing, we come close to reaching the 125-boat mark by passing such big names as Dick Carter, here with his Carter 39, or by the legendary Canadian duo C&C, aka Cuthbertson & Cassian, with the innovative C&C 37 produced in Italy by Benello. Moving between racing monotypes and globetrotting cruisers par excellence, here then are 5 memorable Classic Boats from 11.35 to 11.89 meters.

SELECTION 37
Jeanneau | 11.35 x 3.25 m | 1984 | Joubert & Nivelt
This 37 was born as a one-design racing monotype, budgeted to be 50 in number. Jeanneau will build 251 of them. It is an unexpected success, especially among cruise passengers. It is, yes, fast and safe, but it is some deck solutions that are depopulated, above all the double access to the interior, with a tambour in the cockpit and one on the deckhouse.

C&C 37
Benello / C&C | 11.45 x 3.47 m | 1971 | Cuthbertson & Cassian
Very set back maximum beam and minimal momentum by period standards made this 11-meter boat a then unusual precursor of many to come. As evidenced by the wide transom and its out-of-chorus line compared to the standards of the time. Great credit to Benello, who, with foresight, relied on the design of the brilliant Canadians Cuthbertson & Cassian.

Classic Boats. BALTIC 38 DP
Baltic Yachts | 11.61 x 3.76 m | 1982 | Doug Peterson
Created in collaboration with Peterson, this 12-meter was created to combine ample space above and below deck for comfortable cruising and excellent sailing performance. Successful operation that makes it a best seller for those who want a classic boat of the first IOR generation.

HALLBERG RASSY 382
Hallberg Rassy | 11.62 x 3.64 m | 1984 | Cristoph Rassy & Olle Enderlein
A true bluewater, the 382 designed by Rassy and Enderlein is a hull more than true to the shipyard’s line. It is safe, it is well finished, and it goes everywhere comfortably. The numbers also prove it, 116 boats sold in less than 8 years, one of HR Shipyard’s greatest successes.

CARTER 39
Carter Offshore | 11.89 x 3.89 m | 1974 | Dick Carter
A child of Dick Carter’s genius, the Carter 39 is a classic 1970s boater, an excellent series design. Armed at the masthead and with a sleek hull that is undoubtedly more than marine, the Carter 39 is not only a beauty, but is itself a fast and powerful boat.
