Thomas Tison is one of the designers on the crest of a wave. His daysailers out of the chorus, his commitment to the INEOS Britannia challenge for the 2024 America’s Cup (after campaigns with Mascalzone Latino, Team Origin and Artemis Racing), the new Ecofoiler flying and recyclable dinghy made in collaboration with Italy’s Nlcomp.
L’Été – The super daysailer wood/carbon
Accustomed to working with materials at the top of technology, Tison, however, loves a very old one. Wood. “It’s very simple,” he explained in an interview with the British magazine Yachting World: “modernity must not neglect that from which we all come. On the contrary, he must make the best of it. In the boat world, ignoring wood would mean ignoring the essence of design and construction“.
Thus, in the designs of Tison’s daysailers and racing boats, cutting-edge design, carbon and wood come together-in harmony-in pursuit of beauty, lightness, performance.
Such is the case with L’Été (11.98 x 4.05 m), the French designer’s latest daysailer that will see the light of day in the summer (after all, “summer” is the meaning of its name). A mix of fine woods and advanced composite materials (carbon fiber for the deck, keel and rudder) means the boat weighs only 3,700 kg. The sail area (87.3 sq. m. upwind with square top mainsail) immediately highlights how speed and fun are one of the “focuses” of the design.
L’Été is a boat you can also steer solo, with the two electric winches next to the tiller rudder allowing for “short-handed” sail adjustment as well.
L’Été – Blanket
The deck is distinctive, with wood in organic shapes and the deck as “streamlined” as possible, with rounded lines and no hard angles, a choice that enhances the “flush” effect due to the deck line playing on two levels, with the higher one towards the bow. Wood is also in the hull, with handcrafted yet hi-tech construction derived from the experience of the 48-foot racer Elida.
The cockpit, central and protected and equipped with benches to which backrests can be added. Under the “open” cockpit the storage space is immense, and it is 4 meters long. Optionally, there is the possibility of having side water ballasts for greater stability when sailing. followed, abaft, by what is a true full-beam platform. And that, equipped with a sundeck, becomes a terrace overlooking the sea.
Interior
Because it is not only performance and ease of use that make L’Été special. Plenty of space is left for on-board comfort. Not only on deck, but also below, where there is an original configuration with a central living space “lounge” (with a height of 1.75 m) while a separate “water room” with toilet is accessed from the outside, offering intimacy and storage space.
Returning to the “living room” (square we just can’t call it), inspired by beach clubs on the French Riviera it is equipped with large storage compartments for all the things you need, air conditioner, two multifunction touchscreen displays, an entertainment system, and a refrigerator/storage room for cool drinks and food.
There is no classic canopy but a gold leaf that contributes to weight savings for navigation performance and maximizes the effect of natural light from windows located on the sides of the deckhouse without letting heat in.
