Among the latest entries is Jonathan, a wooden boat built by a Turkish shipyard in 1985. Jonathan is the boat of the Capodarco Community Association of Nardò “Padre Gigi Movia,” which deals with disability and social hardship. This is an asset confiscated from the Mafia, which was used to transport illegal immigrants, and is now part of a social inclusion and education project with schools. The Community, with its two day care centers for the disabled, is also involved in initiating young people into nautical-related trades, pairing them with skilled workers.
There is also no shortage of competitive boats such as Verve Camer, a Comet 50 Carbon Race, a racing boat that has a long history of success in offshore racing. The last regatta won in terms of time is the EST 105 won on May 19, 2023.
The regatta for all
VELA Cup Brindisi is open to all types of racing and cruising boats (no need for cards or certificates), with no age restrictions, bureaucracy or technical complications. There are prizes for everyone, including special prizes for the most elegant boat and the last runner-up. Lots of raffle prizes offered by our sponsors such as the Garmin Mini InReach 2, a Jobe Leona 10.6 inflatable Sup kit, a voucher worth 100 euros to spend on Hinelson.com, a Leatherman multifunction knife and a jacket raffled by YachtIngBond. Everyone can win, from first to last.
Between history and natural oases
The route of the regatta is breathtaking. We will skirt the prestigious Brindisi beaches of Punta Penne and Torre Testa, abutting the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve, a marine protected area that covers an area of 1,000 hectares and is considered an oasis between the land and the sea.
It starts on Saturday, June 3, at 11 a.m., north of the Puntariso Dam outside the port of Brindisi. The first buoy will be placed off the Punta Penne-Punta del Serrone Area of Natural and Historical Interest, in the waters where the famous Bronzes, on display at the Brindisi Archaeological Museum, were found in 1992. It will follow a long coastal side to the second buoy, positioned close to the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area, where they will have to tack to return to the starting line. Coastal sailing of about 13 miles, with course reduction in case of weak winds, to allow everyone to finish the race.
