Marco Rossato, the first paraplegic sailor to circumnavigate Italy in 2018, is ready to set sail on a new tour of Italy. Marco will leave with his boat on June 2 from the Venice Boat Show and will touch – through 26 stops – different landings along the Boot, arriving at the Genoa Boat Show in September. Objective: to check the accessibility of boating facilities and raise awareness of the issue among as many people as possible.

at the Arsenal where the Venice Boat Show will be held. Also on board Tornavento – Marco Rossato’s boat – will be Igor Macera, who will help Marco with both onboard maneuvers and outreach. Indeed, Marco’s challenge is to check the state of the art of Italian marinas regarding accessibility. At the heart of the argument is a fact: having accessible and comfortable facilities for those in wheelchairs means having accessible and comfortable facilities for everyone. Among the different parameters that Marco will evaluate will be aspects related to safety, possible obstacles to mobility, and also environmental protection. In fact, the collaboration with the Marevivo Association also aims to emphasize the discourse of sustainability, and in particular plastic, in the marine environment. Marco Rossato’s Giro d’Italia will end in September 2023 with the arrival at the Genoa Boat Show after these 26 stages:

Marco Rossato. What a boat is Tornavento – The accessible boat
Tornavento is a 9.20-meter sloop with a maximum beam of 3.40 meters and a draft of just 80 centimeters. The boat, designed to be accessible and to accommodate up to 5 wheelchairs on deck, was desired in 1997 by LuigiZambon. Together with his wife Gabriella Assenza, Luigi founded the Sabaudia Sailing and Navigation School, with the desire to introduce sailing to everyone. A few months before his passing, Luigi donated the boat to Marco Rossato, and Tornavento is now available to the association founded by Marco,
Skiddy Helmsmen
.
Tornavento was recently refitted with the contribution of
Madeit4a
, and now has an 80-centimeter-wide carbon-fiber walkway that allows wheelchairs to pass through and supports more than 350 kilograms. Underdeck is also accessed via an up-and-down platform that can be operated either electrically (12V) or manually. Aboard Tornavento is a Bell Marine Transfluid electric motor and also a properly sized photovoltaic system provided by OffGridSun.
Everyone can contribute to Marco Rossato’s challenge by donating to the campaign on Gofundme found at this link in favor of I Timonieri Sbandati Association for the development of “comfort for all” in boating and Marevivo for water conservation.
