sailor of the year 2023
Some of the key players on this first day of voting for the 2023 Sailor of the Year. From top, left to right: Alberto Bona, Ambrogio Beccaria, Gianluca Grisoli, Ginevra Caracciolo, Cecilia Zorzi, Franco Corazza, Mattia Cesana

How are the votes going less than 24 hours after the start of the Velista of the Year 2023, the most prestigious award in Italian sailing, given by the Giornale della Vela since 1991? Great, in fact, great! More than 5,500 votes you have already cast on the Sailor of the Year website.

Sailor of the Year, boom of votes!

Before telling you about the candidates already running and the chasers, category by category, we remind you that you can cast a vote for each category (Sailor of the Year, Passion, Young, Owner, Innovation) upon entering your email. You have until noon on June 5. From the three highest-rated nominees in each category, the Sailing Newspaper jury will choose the winners(detailed rules HERE). And watch out, if in addition to voting, you express an “endorsement” (message of support) in favor of your favorite, you can win some great prizes, as we explain more below!

Now it is time to see who is in the lead. Beware, everything can still change, the rankings are “very fluid” with hour by hour reversals! And the road to closing the polls is still long. Very long.

Category Sailor of the Year

In the category The Sailor of the Year there is a trio firmly in the lead. Two of them are also used to fighting each other at sea-Ambrogio Beccaria and Alberto Bona, the two sailors who are making us dream on the Class 40s, feared by the French. But watch out for the “third wheel”: Cecilia Zorzi, the sailor who won the World and European Double-handed Mixed offshore Championships with the Figaro 3.

Passion Category

In the Passion category it is raining votes for content creator/influencer Emalloru, who has already racked up more than 1,600 preferences and dozens and dozens of messages of support. The Most Voted audience award, if he keeps this up, will not be taken away from him! Also doing very well were Alessio Campriani, the Umbrian sailor who crossed the Atlantic in a 5-meter boat; Pietro Giolli, who refitted a 40-year-old X-79 with his own hands and made the Baltic crossing; and Franco Deganuti and Manuel Vlacich. These two “fools” entered the Guinness World Record for participating with the Melges 24 The Italian Job in the same year in the world’s most attended regattas: Bol d’Or, Round the Island, Barcolana.

Young Category

Head to head in the Young category, the junior category, for Ginevra Caracciolo (ILCA 4F World Champion) and Nicolò Cassita (ILCA 4 World Champion). Men’s vs. women’s laser! How will it turn out? But watch out, watch out for Arthur Brighenti (European Optimist runner-up) and Mattia Cesana, who was crowned ILCA 6 Youth World Champion (formerly Laser Radial) for the second time.

Owner Category

In the Owner category, reserved for owners, Gianluca Grisoli, RS 21 World Champion, 2nd at the RS21 Yamamay Cup, leads the ranking. Behind him is Corrado Annis, winner of the ORC Corinthian Worlds Class C (without professionals) with his Italia 998 LadyDay and Pier Vettor Grimani, Winner of the ORC Corinthian Worlds Class B (without professionals) with his X-41 Sideracordis.

Innovation Category

Franco Corazza leads the ranking in the Innovation category, the one dedicated to designers and innovators in the sailing world. He created Grand Soleil’s new Maxi line. He has a wealth of experience and before he founded successful brands in the boating world, he has a very successful resume: a dozen Italian titles under his belt, several European ones and a world title. He is tailed by Class 40 “round” designers Allagrande Pirelli Gianluca Guelfi and Fabio D’Angeli. Third is the designer on the wave creation Matteo Polli.

Support your candidate for Sailor of the Year and win!

Meanwhile, it is a veritable “boom” of your endorsements to the candidates in the race(first “roundup” here). Because we told you that this 32nd edition of the most prestigious award in Italian sailing given by the Giornale della Vela since 1991 is also special to you supporters. In fact, if you send us your “endorsement” (support for an application) you can win some great prizes raffled off by Garmin Marine(HERE we explain prizes and rules).

Your endorsements to the Sailor of the Year

Here’s a few more, of the many we are receiving!

My vote goes to Ginevra Caracciolo, for the passion she instills in the sport, the achievements the future that awaits her!

Gianluca Lubrano

I vote for Ginevra Caracciolo because at only 16 she was so determined to become world champion in Portugal ILCA 4.

Rossana d’Albero

Peter Giolli, starting from his uncle’s passion, invented a job in Nautor in Pietarsaari, saved all he could and convinced an elderly Finnish sailor to give him his beloved X Yachts for cheap.
Then the long restoration
Then a lot of navigation
So much enthusiasm
True passion

Deserving.
Self made Yachtsman!

Andrea Cito Filomarino

Alberto Bona (IBSA): made me discover a way to live, dream and almost be on a boat on an ocean crossing With a project that goes beyond performance.

Thank you
Stephen Bona

Emalloru is more than just a sailor. He is a maritime survival intellectual of the kind capable of taking on ocean crossings without even bringing supplies and fuel; in fact, all he would need is a canoe or even better, swimming! He absolutely has to be voted in, so (not for anything else but) if he drops dead he will be remembered by the world as Sailor of the Year 2023 and maybe they will even make a statue of him… at the bottom of the sea… in miniature…

Carmine

Emalloru conveyed to those who did not like the sea, or were afraid of it, the passion he puts into sailing.
Now I also want a sailboat, I want to get a license and go around with a pirate flag.
Thanks to him so many dickheads will get on their newly bought sailboat to sail, but at least they will be happy.
Great.

Johnny Depp

Good evening
I believe that the best sailor of the year is Corrado Annis … for competence, enthusiasm, ability, respect and love for the sea.

Antonio Gerardo Russo

As a member of the Sailing Company, I vote Pier Vettor Grimani as Sailor of the Year, because I can’t see another one better.

Thank you and best regards.

Alberto Franchetti

In my opinion Ambrogio Beccaria should win the sailor of the year award because in addition to the incredible talent, already shown during the Mini Transat, he managed to adapt well and very quickly to a new boat, so much so that he got there in front of the Route Du Rhum, the Rorc 600 and the Defi Atlantique with an incredible battle with Alberto Bona and Ian Lipinski (two other tough guys), these races certainly need no introduction, as by the way the skipper we are talking about. I also think that on the human side he is really a very humble and sensitive guy, very good at conveying his passion. One thing that I was really pleased to know was that he was so interested in environmental protection, a problem that is growing day by day and to which we should pay more attention than in recent years.

Paul Guiso

I am voting for Nicholas Cassitta because he is an example for young people.

Clara Putzu

Franco Corazza is a man of great heart and humility. A master of professionalism. Each of his creations, because that is what they are, achieves the highest aesthetic standards, along with the ever-present sporting prowess.

Ilaria

Rated Franco Corazza
Perhaps not too well known to the uninitiated from 50 protagonist first as an athlete; then as a team organizer; as an entrepreneur producer of Italian boats of excellence with solutions later copied by all as a result of the concrete experience gained. For me number 1 deserves recognition

Good morning,

my vote for the award ” Sailor of the Year 2023 ” Passion category goes to the couple Deganutti Franco/ Vlachic Manuel because in addition to passion they have shown a lot of imagination and originality…

Best regards

arch. Paolo Piccinin

We remind you that you have two chances to send in your endorsement by June 14:

  • By writing an email (signed) with reasons why you should win Sailor of the Year to speciali@panamaeditore.it
  • Filming a selfie-style video in which you express endorsement and motivation, posting it on Instagram tagging @jornaledellavela and with the hashtags #velistadellanno or #velistadellanno2023
  • The top 7 endorsements, chosen by the Journal of Sailing jury, will be rewarded with two Garmin quatix 7 sailing smartwatches and five state-of-the-art Garmin InReach two-way satellite receivers.

Please note: we will not necessarily choose the endorsements of the candidates who turn out to be winners, or even just the 60 candidates in the race. You can speak out for whomever you want: it will be the manner and transport with which you do so that will make the difference!
