Blue Flag 2023
The Marina Cala de’ Medici-which will host the first leg of the VELA Cup 2023 from May 26 to 28-has again this year been awarded the Blue Flag Landings

As every year, the best Italian marinas and marinas were awarded the coveted“Blue Flag” award. These are the landings that have distinguished themselves for sustainable management, environmentally, socially and in terms of services. As many as 84 landings scattered throughout Italy met the stringent requirements to obtain the Blue Flag 2023.

Which regions have the most Blue Flag Landings in 2023?

The region most heavily represented in the 2023 Blue Flags map is once again Liguria, which leads the ranking with 16 landings spread across all four of its provinces. In second place is Friuli Venezia Giulia, which plants the Blue Flag in as many as 14 landings, while closing the podium with 9 land ings is Campania. Next are Veneto and Sardinia with 8 landings, Puglia and Tuscany with 7 landings and Marche with 6 landings. Close behind are Lazio, Sicily and Calabria with 2 landings and Basilicata, Emilia Romagna and Abruzzo with 1 landing.

The criteria

This year they rose to 38 the criteria to be met – 23 imperative and 15 suggested – to enter the list of landings awarded the Blue Flag. Among the different types of criteria-which you will find listed here in the bandierablu.org – there are Environmental Education and Information, Environmental Management, Services and Safety, Water Quality, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Social/Community Participation. The regulations assume a responsible attitude on the part of port administrations, with environmental cautions to reduce the impact of the facility. A few examples:

  • The water at the landing must be visibly clean, with no evidence of pollution, such as oily slicks, floating garbage, discharges, or other obvious traces of pollution
  • The landing must be equipped with facilities and services for the disabled
  • The landing must be equipped with containers for separate collection of recyclable waste such as glass, aluminum, paper, plastic, organic waste, etc.
