From June 19-24 the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC), a non-stop offshore race of more than 250 miles reserved for mixed crews, will be run. To follow from July 2 to 28 will be the Giro d’Italia a Vela. Both events are part of the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023.
Never before has there been an appetite for offshore racing in Italy. Events that follow the call of open horizons, travel, sailing offshore. But also competitions where one can measure one’s technical level, compare oneself with others and show off the “made in Italy” talent that even in sailing is so highly valued and unique.
Giving our country the right boost in offshore racing are above all the successes in recent years of a new generation of Italian sailors. People like Ambrogio Beccaria, Alberto Bona, Andrea Mura, Alberto Riva and Giancarlo Pedote. All determined, rebellious in their own way, and swaggering just enough to take over the international sports and media scene.
The Nastro Rosa Tour 2023 takes you offshore
Well, for those who want to follow in the footsteps of these fantastic sailors, even in our country there is no shortage of great technical offshore races. Such as, for example, the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC), a non-stop regatta reserved for mixed crews (one man and one woman), which is being raced June 19-24 on the very fast Figaro Class 3s. The event is part of the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour 2023, a prestigious offshore racing circuit organized by Difesa Servizi S.p.A. and Sailing Series International Sports & Events, which among its goals is to spread the culture of offshore double racing in Italy as well.
Partners of the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour 2023 include ENIT – National Tourism Agency, as well as all major sailing institutions from World Sailing to Eurosaf, from the FIV, through Orc and Rorc, to The Magenta Project, a project dedicated to women.
Offshore double is the format of the future
And it is from the collaboration between the organizers of the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023 and the Offshore Racing Council that the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC) was born. The regatta will start on June 19 from La Spezia and travel between the Ligurian Sea and the Upper Tyrrhenian Sea with an expected arrival in Genoa. Two possible routes are currently being worked out by the organizers. The first involves a passage to Giraglia, at the northernmost point of Corsica, and then a clockwise circumnavigation of the island of Elba for a total of 257 miles. The second, on the other hand, sees the fleet head directly south, passing between Piombino and Elba, circumnavigating Giglio, and then heading back up to Genoa. On this second route the miles to grind become 274.
There will also be special Wild Cards that will allow the winners of the DMO ORC Worlds, scheduled to take place in Spain in September, and the DMO ORC Europeans, scheduled to take place in Denmark in June, to participate in the monotype events organized by Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023.
Time to toast the winners and get going again
The award ceremony of the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC) will be held on June 24 in the Sailing Village set up in Genoa on the occasion of another major event that is part of the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour 2023: the Giro d’Italia a Vela. In this event, offshore racing on Figaro Class 3s will be accompanied by competitions on Waszp dinghies among the buoys below the coast and trials with WingFoiling class sailboards. The Tour of Italy by Sail will depart July 2 from Genoa and circumnavigate our entire peninsula in 9 exciting stages before arriving July 28 in Portorož, near Venice.
In addition to the one in Genoa, Sailing Villages will be set up at all the other stages of the Giro d’Italia a Vela, allowing all visitors to watch the races up close and take part in sailing initiatives and experiences.
In short, two consecutive high-level offshore events, the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC) and the Giro d’Italia, that can surely satisfy the craving of those on land who just don’t want to be there…
