Sailor of the Year, support your candidates and win!
And we told you that this 32nd edition of the most prestigious award in Italian sailing given by the Giornale della Vela since 1991 is also special to you supporters. In fact, if you send us your “endorsement” (support for an application) you can win some great prizes raffled off by Garmin Marine(HERE we explain the prizes and rules).
In summary, you have two chances to send your endorsement by June 14:
- By writing an email (signed) with reasons why you should win Sailor of the Year to speciali@panamaeditore.it
- Filming a selfie-style video in which you express endorsement and motivation, posting it on Instagram tagging @jornaledellavela and with the hashtags #velistadellanno or #velistadellanno2023
- The top 7 endorsements, chosen by the Journal of Sailing jury, will be rewarded with two Garmin quatix 7 sailing smartwatches and five state-of-the-art Garmin InReach two-way satellite receivers.
Please note: we will not necessarily choose the endorsements of the candidates who turn out to be winners, or even just the 60 candidates in the race. You can speak out for whomever you want: it will be the manner and transport with which you do so that will make the difference!
The “illustrious” endorsements of Luca Barbareschi and Flavio Favini
We have already been “inundated” with messages. And we had two surprises: the first is the unexpected video endorsement of the famous actor Luca Barbareschi (who is an unsuspected sailor), in favor of Vincenzo Onorato (this year’s already decreed winner of the Epic Career Sailor of the Year award). Check this out:
Vincenzo Onorato stirs the spirits. Even well-known sailor Flavio Favini (among other things, our Sailor of the Year in 2003) spent time on him:
Sailor of the Year, your endorsements
As we anticipated, not only video. Here are some of your (many) endorsements we received at speciali@panamaeditore.it! You have time to send them to us until June 14!
Naples, May 10, 2023
Geneva Caracciolo deserves to be awarded the title Sailor of the Year 2023 because she gives all her energy to the sport every day, at all times she is training to pursue her goals, with a grueling routine that leads her to be a fearsome opponent, able to dominate thanks to absolutely original tactical ideas and incredibly effective and beautiful boat handling in all conditions, to which is added a stainless mental toughness that has allowed her to win the world championship against a fleet of sublime level, in a class that of the Ilca 4 that is currently among the most competitive in the world of youth sailing. Added to all her flair is her playful and friendly side that makes her so beloved in the Ilca 4 fleet, and for which I see in her a figure capable of promoting the sport among young people and inspiring the champions of the future.
Sergio Miletto
Good morning.
All candidates have many good reasons to be voted for, but I think Ambrose Beccaria is the one who deserves to receive my vote for having humbly and unassumingly undertaken great feats with an absolutely new boat and with surprising and truly remarkable results.
AMBROSE BECCARIA is my choice.
Max Damioli
Hello, my choice goes to Alberto Bona. He is great, I find him super concrete, talks little and does a lot. In an age of “bombastic announcements” and pumped-up communication, I love his style. As soon as he was given the chance, he turned out to be a very good skipper, and I think he, together with Ambrogio Beccaria, will be our weapon against the French in the Ocean!
Silvia Dupré
Marta Maggetti best represents the Sardinian spirit! Constant, stubborn, never throws herself down and has been able, year after year, to grow unhurriedly to become the strongest Italian on the boards. She is the true heir to Sensini! I had seen her shy and awkward on stage at the VELAFestival in Genoa in 2014, where you awarded her among the Young Sailors of the Year. Marta has grown so much today! A legend! Marta Maggetti Sailor of the Year!
Francesco Parodi
Who said that sailing is only racing and competition? I in particular loved the stories of Pietro Giolli, who got his hands dirty and salvaged an old X-79 and then crossed the Baltic, and Alessio Campriani, the Umbrian sailor who made it across the ocean in a 5-meter boat. These are the stories raga. They should be read by those who say our kids are bamboozled!
