Yesterday we told you about the dismasting of Kevin Escoffier’s IMOCA 60 Holcim PRB during Leg 4 of The Ocean Race (round-the-world crewed stage race), today we show you this video documenting what happened, off Brazil, while the team was leading the fourth leg of The Ocean Race from Itajaì to Newport.
Kevin Escoffier disembarkation, the video
A “mechanical failure,” a structural failure, as Escoffier explains in the video, caused the dismasting.
There is one thing to take cues from, especially for those who cruise and family sail. The calmness and professionalism with which the crew handled the emergency: the distress call, the retrieval of material from the water… All without much nervousness (at least, not shown on video!). There is only one secret on board in these cases. Let each crew member know their roles to the best of their ability. The real difference between an organized crew and an improvised one lies precisely in the coolness “under stress,” the result of careful preparation.
Who is Kevin Escoffier
Kevin Escoffier, born in Saint Malo in 1980, is one of France’s most experienced sailors. He has long experience in the IMOCA 60 world, solo sailing and ocean record hunting. In 2018 he won the Volvo Ocean Race (round-the-world crewed race in stages) with the Chinese team Dongfeng, in the 2020-21 Vendée Globe (round-the-world non-stop solo race) the his IMOCA 60 PRB broke in two and the skipper Was rescued by colleague Jean le Cam.
At The Ocean Race, aboard the IMOCA 60 PRB Holcim flying the colors of Switzerland race with Escoffier, Annemieke Bes (NED), Benjamin Schwartz (FRA), Georgia Schofiel (AUS), Fabien Delahaye (FRA). They are all well, fortunately.
