Scheduled for June 19 to 24 is the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC), a non-stop regatta reserved for mixed crews, one man and one woman, racing on the fast Figaro Class 3. The event is part of the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023.
The culture of offshore doubles racing has grown worldwide in recent years, especially after it was proposed as an Olympic class for the Paris 2024 Games. Although then the International Olympic Committee decided for the time being not to admit it to the Olympics, that of offshore doubles is actually a now widely recognized, growing format that is absolutely worthy of attention. So much so that many are not giving up on the idea of seeing it fielded at the Olympic Games of the future, not least because upon closer inspection as a sailing discipline it captures the true essence of this ancient competition between continents.
In fact, it allows for racing on identical boats anywhere in the world and highlights the athletes’ personal talents, such as seamanship, navigation, and endurance, which should take precedence over specific boat knowledge. It is also a discipline that could make great use of the current international offshore sailing scene full of high-level events with which so many sailors identify.
Pink Ribbon Tour and Orc united to spread double offshore
And it is precisely with the aim of spreading more and more mixed doubles on offshore courses that theEurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC) is being held in Italy next June. The official regatta notice is already available online and you can proceed to registration here. The event is part of the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023, a prestigious offshore racing circuit organized by Difesa Servizi S.p.A. e Sailing Series International Sports & Events with the intent to spread through sailing a series of decisive values for Italy: promoting our territory and slow tourism, tourism in lighthouses, supporting the network of national ports, popularizing environmental sustainability and supporting the participation of women in the nautical sector.
Among the partners of the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023 the main one is ENIT – National Tourism Agency. But there is also the support of all the major sailing institutions from World Sailing to Eurosaf, from FIV, through Orc and Rorc, to The Magenta Project, a project dedicated to women.
Upper Tyrrhenian route and “wild card” up for grabs
And it is from the collaboration between the organizers of the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023 and the Offshore Racing Council that the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC) scheduled for June 19-24 was born. This is a long non-stop race lasting 2-3 days reserved for mixed crews, one man and one woman, which is raced on the very fast Figaro Class 3 equipped with foils. The route will start from La Spezia and wind between the Ligurian Sea and the Upper Tyrrhenian Sea with an expected arrival in Genoa. There will also be special Wild Cards that will allow the winners of the DMO ORC Worlds, scheduled to take place in Spain in September, and the DMO ORC Europeans, scheduled to take place in Denmark in June, to participate in the monotype events organized by Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023.
Winning the last two editions of the Eurosaf Mixed Offshore European Championship (EMOEC) was Cecilia Zorzi (in 2021 paired with Alberto Bona and in 2022 with Giovanni Di Monaco) who subsequently also won the DMO Worlds 2022 in Portoroz, again paired with Di Monaco. We are all curious to see who will win this year, but most of all we are rooting for the offshore double, the sailing format of the future!
