RAN 630, the offshore regatta organized by YC Livorno and Sezione Velica Marina Militare Livorno (in collaboration with YC Costa Smeralda and YC Capri), returns on April 23.
RAN 630 – Seven reasons to attend
A unique opportunity to prove yourself in Tyrrhenian. We have summarized in seven reasons why you should definitely not miss it.
At least once in a lifetime
It is a must-do “challenge” for all those who want to experience real sailors in the Mediterranean, on par with events like the Middle Sea Race. Six hundred and thirty miles in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea, from Livorno in Tuscany to Porto Cervo in Sardinia and then on to Capri in Campania and finally back to Livorno.
The course of the 2023 edition will see an important novelty in the approach to the island of Capri: the buoy will in fact be positioned off Marina Piccola and no longer in front of Marina Grande. This will allow crews to avoid the frequent drops in wind in the most sheltered area of Capri and will add further fascination to the race as boats round the buoy near the Faraglioni.
(Almost) anyone can participate in RAN 630!
The RAN 630 2023 edition, organized by the Yacht Club Livorno with the Naval Academy and the collaboration of the Navy Sailing Section, is open to all boats over 9.50 meters in length, single-hull or multihull (in this case over 8 meters lft), with ORC and/or IRC certificate and is part of the Italian Offshore Championship. Special rankings will also be made for: Grand Cruise Division, Class 950, “IOR” type boats and “Double Handed” boats.
For those who like to run in two
That’s right, Double Handed. At RAN 630 there is a category and ranking for those who want to sail with only two people on board, avoiding gathering a large crew. And who knows, you might not win “overall,” as happened to Maglione-Villi’s GS40 Blues in 2021, or come first across the finish line among everyone as happened to Gianluca Roveraro and Andrea Pendibene’s Pogo 12.50 (photo below).
You will race together with mythical boats
Among the more than thirty boats already registered are some “mythical” ones. We mention just three, from the Navy: Gemini, a first-class IOR sloop designed by Azzurra designer Andrea Vallicelli, a Classic IOR of excellence; the ketch Orsa Maggiore; and the Bermudian yawl Stella Polare.

At RAN 630 there will be lots of prizes
Lots of prizes are provided for participants, and not only to the top three in each category in the regatta. Sponsors of the regatta are leading Tuscan high-end kitchen company Officine Gullo and watchmaker based on the island of Elba Locman, which will raffle the Montecristo and Island models to the winners.
Female sailors, ready for the challenge?
It is the right opportunity for women who like a challenge. Concurrently with the RAN 630 is the Female Offshore Mediterranean Championship, which opens the season of the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour. Sailors, there are still places available to rent a beautiful Figaro 3 and register for the Championship. We told you about it HERE
It will be an echo regatta!
Last but not least. The RAN 630 is an “eco” regatta. Competitors will be offered the Onboard Ecological Officer (RECO) initiative, a new crew figure responsible for good practices in sustainability and marine protection. The first boat to join RECO to transit Porto Cervo will receive the One Ocean Trophy.
