The Mediterranean from a sailing point of view is a “small ocean,” and there is no better way to get to know and appreciate it than to take part in the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023, a circuit of five beautiful offshore races. It starts on April 22.
Those who frequent the world of offshore racing know how challenging our Mediterranean can be. Certainly fascinating because of the beauty of the coastline it is surrounded by, but also quite treacherous for the crews who have to cross it under sail. That is why the most experienced navigators call it the “little ocean” and have great respect for it. In spite of its small size and “closed” conformation, the “Mare Nostrum” in fact has winds change direction much more rapidly than in the oceans and are also less predictable. Not to mention that more turbulent weather phenomena are increasing year by year. And then there are rugged coastlines, archipelagos, shoals, and heavy and constant maritime traffic.
It is no coincidence then that the many offshore regattas held in the Mediterranean attract more and more racers from all over the world. Just look at the rankings of prestigious events such as the Giraglia, the Middle Sea Race, the Archipelago 650, the Palermo Monte Carlo, the 151 Miglia or the Brindisi-Corfu, just to name a few. So-called “long” crewing, doubles, and even solo competitions that are now no match for French, British, or Australian competitions.
Here’s why lining up at the start is a spectacle
And it is precisely the Mediterranean that will be the sailing stage for the Nastro Rosa Tour 2023, a prestigious offshore racing circuit organized by Sailing Series International and Defense Services. Now in its third year, the event features a schedule of five different , spectacular and exciting competitions that will see female, male or mixed crews from around the world compete.
The first event of the season is the 2nd Mediterranean Female Offshore Championship, an offshore regatta in which 10 women’s crews compete on the route of the legendary RAN 630 between Livorno, Porto Cervo, Capri, on a one-design with foils that represents the state of the art in world hi-tech sailing: the Bénéteau Figaro Class 3. Organized by the Livorno Yacht Club and the Naval Academy, the regatta is part of the Italian Offshore Championship and is an excellent training ground for offshore sailing given its technical difficulties, so much so that some have even taken to calling it the “Fastnet of the Tyrrhenian.”
The best way to experience the high ground
The event is scheduled from April 22 to May 1 and there is still time to register but places are limited, so take advantage of it now! The Mediterranean Female Offshore Championship will also be an opportunity to get closer to the world of offshore sailing which, with proper preparation, is within everyone’s reach and then perhaps in the months to follow perfect themselves by participating in the other events planned by the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour 2023.
Here, it is events like this that allow everyone to get passionate about sailing and to truly experience, explore and fall in love with our dear Mediterranean, one of the most beautiful seas in the world.
