Classic Boat Manifesto
we selected 100 of them and, now, we see 5 small but absolutely brilliant ones. Here are the unparalleled 5 Classic Boats from 9.14 to 9.23 meters.

5 Classic Boats from 9.14 to 9.23 meters

L’
Harpège
, a cult object, is the first among the Classic Boats in this review. And it sets the pace for the following, immediately introduced by the genius Vallicelli’s first masterpiece, the
Ziggurat 916
. A series of not-so-small boats anymore, but certainly great in terms of both design and history, real gems. Here, then, are 5 Classic Boats that, in their own way, were able to revolutionize the world of sailing.

ARPÈGE

Dufour | 9.14 x 3.02 m | 1967 | Michel Dufour

Who doesn’t know the Arpège, the first real large series fiberglass boat? Thanks to an obscure mad engineer, Michel Dufour, who decides to design and then build his ideal boat. The first example in GRP was launched in 1967 and with him at the helm he won immediately. 1600 examples built from 1967 to 1978. There is nothing more to say.

CPR | 9.16 x 3.02 m | 1976 | Andrea Vallicelli

In 1976 three young designers and friends-Andrea Vallicelli, Vittorio Mariani, and Nicola Sironi-did not realize that, with the Ziggurat, they were devising a future sailing icon. The Ziggurat, for tonnage IOR a Half Tonner, is beautiful, fast and livable. Definitely a milestone in Italian boating.

DUCK 31

Racing Sailboats / Avallone | 9.20 x 3.75 m | 1981 | Massimo Paperini

Federico Avallone takes over the Artmare shipyard and relies on the very young designer Massimo Paperini, thus was born Duck 31, a great rival to the Farr 31 whose stern lines it resembles. It was also produced in “do-it-yourself” kits. It was born to race in the Half Ton class and, even today, is a leading boat in this category.

PIERROT

Mariver | 9.20 x 3.00 m | 1973 | Studio Sciomachen

Produced in about 50 examples, it is one of the best boats designed by the Sciomachen brothers, who named their boats after commedia dell’arte masks. Produced in two versions, the first with a short stern and, later, elongated. In the regatta it was a Half Tonner IOR.

Classic Boats. MILLER 31

Zuanelli | 9.23 x 3.20 m | 1978 | Bob Miller & Ben Lexcen

With the water lines of Ben Lexcen, the man who managed to wrest theAmerica’s Cup from the Americans, he could only be a minor prodigy. Designed for racing, it also stands out as an excellent cruiser, with sleek, planing lines. The deckhouse is questionable aesthetically, but it is the results that count.
