There is an 18-year-old boat that is the benchmark, in terms of performance, in the racing world, especially in ORC tonnage. And to think that the ClubSwan 42 (12.98 x 3.93 m), created as a “little sister” to the 45′ for New York Yacht Club members, was not an immediate success in terms of sales (58 boats launched). With the advent of the ORC International racing regulations, which replaced the IMS in 2008, the German Frers-designed cruiser/racer discovered itself as a “boat to beat” that, even today, has few rivals in the 40-foot segment.
It is no coincidence that it has won so many world and European offshore titles, is always among the protagonists of Mediterranean regattas, and is therefore highly sought after among racing enthusiasts. Not many used ClubSwan 42s can be found. Those who have them are holding on to them tightly: you will hardly find a 42′ for less than 200/250 thousand euros for sale.
Secrets of ClubSwan 42
What are the secrets of this boat? Meanwhile, its light weight (less than 7 tons) combined with a large sail area (109 sq. m.). But it is its versatility that is the real selling point: the ClubSwan 42 goes fast in both light air and breezes. In addition, the semi-planing shape of the hull makes it perform well at load-bearing gaits. Where even with the gennaker he is able to go down at very wide angles almost like he has a spinnaker. Finally, the short waterline length resulting from the raised stern over the water, an all-too-narrow hull, and the single rudder blade (despite the double wheel) also make the boat competitive from an ORC compensation system standpoint.
Further proof of this boat’s performance comes from the race courses of the recent Genoa Sailing Week and the Cup of Champions in Trani, where ClubSwan 42s were absolute stars.
Genoa Sailing Week – Triplete of ClubSwan 42s in ORC B
At the third Genoa Sailing Week, after three days of racing in Ligurian waters organized by the Yacht Club Italiano, the top three places were the preserve of three ClubSwan 42s: Koiré – Spirit of Nerina by Marco Caglieris (Y.C. Como), ahead of Rachistar by Massimo Schieroni (Savona Y.C.) and Suspiria the Revenge by Antonino Venneri (Y.C. Punta Sardegna). Remarkable performance by Spirit of Nerina, with the evergreen Flavio Favini on board, which finished in first position in all 4 races held.
The other winners: ORC A: final podium with YCI colors thanks to Alberto Magnani’s ClubSwan 45 Tengher, ahead of the Yacht Club Italiano boat ELO II. Third place for Italy’s 13.98 Sakura by Andrea Busso.
ORC C: First place for Gianluigi Dubbini’s Italia 9.98 Sarchiapone Fuoriserie (Y.C. Sanremo) ahead of the other Italia Yachts-the 11.98 Concrete Investing-To Be of Stefano Rusconi (Y.C.I.) and third place for Davide Noli’s Corsa 915 Farfallina 2 (Y.C. Sanremo). ORC D: In the minor class, Carlo Tadeo’s Elan 31 Sangria (Forza e Coraggio Le Grazie) won ahead of Piero Arduino’s Tekno (LNI Genova).
IRC B: Leading the final standings is ImXtinente, Adelio Frixione’s X-35 (Y.C.I.) ahead of Starring, owned by Pietro Tubino (C.N. Marina Genova Aeroporto). Among the 8-meter S.I., victory for Aria by Serena Galvani.
Champions Cup – Italy Yachts Trophy
A ClubSwan 42 also took center stage in Trani, at the fifth edition of the “Coppa dei Campioni – Trofeo Italia Yachts,” organized by LNI Trani, assisted by Circolo della Vela Bari. We are talking about Renzo Grottesi’s Be Wild (CV Portocivitanova), winner of both the overall and Group B, where in third place was a sister boat, Morgan V.
Second was the Grand Soleil 43 R Reve de vie of Ermanno Galeati and Davide Angelo (CN Sanbenedettese). Third was Sugar 3 the Italy Yachts 11.98 of Estonian Ott Kikkas (YC Tallin). The Zonal Offshore Championship – Don Ferdinando Capece Minutolo Trophy for the Cruising Regatta class goes to the IY 9.98 Unpòpergioco by Niki Vescia (LNI Trani) followed by. Morgan V, ClubSwan 42 by Nicola De Gemmis (CC Barion) and by. Trottolina Bellikosa Race X35 by Saverio Trotta (YC Marina del Gargano).
The Indeco Trophy, dedicated to the Grand Cruiser zonal champion went to Euristica 2, X-43 by Siro Casolo (CN Bari) followed by Fenicia, Salona 42 by Fabrizio Rizzi-Luigi Corvasce (CV Giovinazzo – LNI Giulianova) and Biba, Bavaria 35 Match by Giacomo Scalera (CUS Bari).
The event, which is also valid for the Adriatic East Ionian National Area Championship, saw for Class B, as anticipated, “Be Wild” finish first followed by “Reve de Vie” and “Morgan V.”
For Class C, on the other hand, in the top three places we find only Italia Yachts from outside the region with Sugar 3 in the lead followed by Unpòpergioco by Niki Vescia (LNI Trani) and Scugnizza, by Enzo De Blasio (CC Napoli).
“We had a great success in both the quality of the racers and the organization. All this accompanied by ideal weather and sea conditions for the smooth and extremely technical conduct of the regattas – Alberto La Tegola, president of the VIII Zone Fiv, comments. The icing on the cake was then the opportunity for all participants to discover the beauty of the area once they returned to port at the end of the races. With this in mind, we are already thinking about the next edition, which will try to continue in the vein of enhancing the territory“.
