Five used boats from 9.62 to 12.35 m

There are five boats, as many as three of which were designed by Slovenian studio J&J, perfect for having fun and being comfortable. We present them in ascending order of length. A safe used car: guarantees the Sailing Newspaper!

Stag 32 – 9.63 m – Gloriously IOR

The first of the used boats for sale on our marketplace is a boat and comes directly from the “golden age” of IOR. We are talking about a Stag 32 (9.63 x 3.25 m) that Luca Taddei designed for the Mark III shipyard in Desenzano (Brescia) in the 1980s.

A boat born for racing but fun and comfortable for cruising as well. The rigging is sloop with 7/8 jib, the hull is round with sleek lines, the deckhouse low and tapered. The cockpit, complemented by the “classic” “sharpened” IOR (International Offshore Rule, or the tonnage and compensation system that allowed different boats to race together in homogeneous classes from 1970 to 1994) transom, is large, with all rigging deferred.

The interior offers up to seven berths in the three separate rooms (two double cabins and the saloon, with galley and chart table, in which three bunks can be made).

The model we offer, visible in San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine), is from 1984. Complete with every equipment, it was refitted for the last time in February 2023, so it is ready to sail, turnkey.

Elan 33 – 10.35 m – Successful cruiser/racer

We continue with the second of the used boats in the review, staying in the mythical 1980s. A true bestseller, the Elan 33 (10.35 x 3.30 m) made the fortune of the Slovenian Elan shipyard with more than 500 units sold since 1987, when it went into production based on a design by Japek Jacopin.

The secret of this 10-meter’s success lay in its excellent sailing performance and versatility, making it a perfect cruiser-racer. The line and aesthetics are pleasing and uncluttered. Traditional fiberglass hull with balsa sandwich deck. Aft is a large cabin with a double bed, closet, seat and two portholes. On the opposite side is the toilet, which is well habitable with a waxing closet. Squared off is an L-shaped galley, a good-size chart and a dinette with sofas that can be converted into bunks. In the bow is a cabin with a double bed.

The model under the lens, visible in Lignano Sabbiadoro (Udine) is from 1996 and is perfectly maintained. Among the boat’s “goodies” is a new Beta marine 20 hp engine, installed in August 2022 (with two-year warranty).

Maletto 35 – 10.90 m – Unique gourmet piece

The third of the used boats for sale in our marketplace is a connoisseur’s piece. A prototype Maletto 35 (10.90 m), which was built on the designs of Claudio Maletto (among the designers of Moro di Venezia and Luna Rossa) in “one piece” mahogany laminated wood, by the Dal Ferro shipyard, in 1992. A well-known boat in the Adriatic and a multi-winner in regattas.

An elegant boat (her name is “Serenissima”) thanks to the look of the hull, but equipped with a comfortable and modern deck plan, with a low, tapered deckhouse and a contained and protected cockpit, where the tiller rudder finds its place. The maximum beam is toward the middle of the boat, below deck the saloon with galley is large with two sofas that become two additional beds. The boat is visible, in perfect condition, in Ravenna.

Used boats. Salona 37 – 11.29 m – Fast, sporty, comfortable

We go up in size for the fourth of the boats used in the review. A Salona 37 (11.29 x 3.60 m). For the creation of the Salona 37, Slovenian designers J & J took the shapes and design parameters of the larger Salona 45 and the smaller 40-footer.

An apt choice that has led the 11-meter boat from the then Ad Boats (Croatian shipyard today Salona Yachts) to become a decidedly sporty vessel that has nothing to fear against rivals in its class.

The slightly fractional sail plan includes a large mainsail with a reduced headsail, which is powerful in light winds and waves. Comfortable and cozy interior spaces offered as two cabins and two bathrooms or three cabins with one bathroom.

The model we offer here is from 2007 (the boat remained in production from 2006 to 2011) and is a two-cabin, two-bathroom version. Perfectly maintained, visible in Venice is powered by 28-horsepower Yanmar inboard and is hyperaccessed.

Used boats. Bavaria 40 Cruiser – 12.35 m – Not just cruiser

We continue with the last of today’s used boats, once again designed by the Slovenians at J&J Design. We are talking about a Bavaria 40 Cruiser (12.35 x 3.99 m).

Nearly vertical foredeck with fairly honed entry sections and a wide stern with high exits over the water make this pure cruiser resemble a modern cruiser racer.

But its cruising character has not been erased. The ratio of displacement to sail area thus remains low, just as the spaces below deck remain cozy and livable. The elimination of the spoiler and humpback allowed for aft cockpit space, allowing the deckhouse to be set back and gain volume below deck.

The model we propose, from 2009, has three cabins and two bathrooms. Equipped with every cruising convenience (there is even a mainsail furler in the mast) she is powered by a Volvo 40 horsepower. The boat can be seen in La Spezia, Liguria.
