There is a new format of offshore racing that everyone likes, especially the women who are the absolute stars of it. It is the Navy Nastro Rosa Tour that in 2023 awaits you with 5 unmissable events organized between Italy and France.
When it comes to offshore racing in recent years, there has been an increasingly popular trend among the sailing community. No longer a dry, take-it-or-leave-it event. But a true format of competitions that are replicated with the same formula on multiple dates spread over an entire season. Not only that, but in this type of circuit the scenery also changes, as each individual event is contested in different locations that almost always reserve absolutely different weather conditions, route variables and tactical choices for the fleets of participants.
The benefits of this “multi-event” standard are many for racers. First, one can choose to participate in one or more regattas, thus organizing one’s work or family schedule. Then you can accumulate points that add up in the various trials and are an extra motivation to do better at each race, grow progressively and put previous experience to good use. Another point in favor of the circuits is that they are an extraordinary opportunity to meet where we see each other again after a short time, cultivate friendships and make new ones. Last but not least, there is the opportunity to visit new locations, navigate unfamiliar stretches of coastline, and appreciate the surrounding area.
The most beautiful regatta circuit of the year
One of these “multi-regatta” events that has been a huge success in Italy since the beginning is the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour. This is a beautiful offshore racing circuit organized by Sailing Series International and now in its third edition, which has among its hallmarks the promotion of women’s sailing and all women skippers. And to do it in the most authentic, ambitious and intelligent way possible, which is through long distance, technical and challenging regattas. As well as on boats that represent the state of the art in sailing technological evolution: the Bénéteau Figaro Class 3, 10.85-meter one-designs equipped with foils that were designed by Van Peteghem, Lauriot, Prevost (VPLP)
In 2023, the Navy Pink Ribbon Tour encompasses as many as five dates. It starts on April 20 from Livorno with the 2nd Mediterranean Female Offshore Championship, an offshore regatta reserved for 10 female-only crews that will be run on the course of the legendary RAN 630, one of the most impressive regattas in the Mediterranean. The fleet will have to sail 630 miles between Livorno, Porto Cervo, Capri and then back to Livorno, for an estimated time of about 3 days. In short, a tough and compelling challenge to get the girls off on the right “sea” foot.
Racing together always wins
The second event on the calendar is June 1-8 in Cannes, France, where the Double Mixed Offshore European Championship is scheduled, an offshore regatta reserved for double and mixed crews held under the auspices of the Offshore Racing Council. After that we will enter the highlight event of the season, which is the Tour of Italy Sailing reserved for women’s, men’s or mixed double crews. The circumnavigation of the Belpaese will be divided into 8 stages that from Genoa to Venice will touch the most iconic locations in our country with offshore and coastal races.
Closing in a big way in the Venice Lagoon
With the Giro d’Italia over, the fleet of women skippers engaged in the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour will return to racing Oct. 2-8 in Taranto to contest the Double Mixed Offshore World Championship, an offshore regatta again reserved for mixed female and male crews. Finally we will all move to Venice for the highly anticipated event that will close the season. We are talking about the Navy Pink Ribbon Veloce, which with its 1,492 miles to be sailed in doubles boasts the record for the longest regatta in the Mediterranean.
As you see so many appointments, so many offshore regattas, one more beautiful and different from the other, where of course it matters to win. But to participate in the Pink Ribbon Tour 2023, in any or all of the stages, in short to be there lined up among so many other enthusiasts, when you think about it, is already a great victory!
