The concept of a “cruise-regatta” boat can be interpreted in various ways, with designs that are sometimes skewed toward one of the two worlds they represent and sometimes more balanced. Well-known design firm Judel Vrolijk&Co, which has worked with Hanse, Cantiere del Pardo and other major brands over the years, has launched a soon-to-be-realized project reinterpreting the cruise-regatta theme, the JV 43 for the Slovenian shipyard Oceantec.
JV 43, a longer Class 40 with a comfortable interior
“Using the latest studies on offshore hulls, we opted for a solution that is very similar in concept to a Class 40, but with a longer hull to better accommodate the necessary interior and equipment,” the design firm says.
The deck layout is designed for small crew maneuvering, and the cockpit is sheltered from the deckhouse and its continuation just as it is in Class 40. The cockpit is designed around 2 inward entry ports and has a central winch where all halyards are deferred, out of a total of 5 winches. All lines and halyards return to the cockpit area, so maneuvering is possible within a largely water-protected space.
JV 43 – Innovative Interior
The living area is designed around the engine compartment, which is positioned in the middle of the boat to keep the center of gravity low, and serves as the navigational station and saloon table. On each side we have sleeping places, foldable, for sleeping or storage. Moving forward from the living area is an open-plan kitchen equipped with a cooktop and pull-out refrigerator-box. On the left side is an enclosed toilet room. The forward compartment is dedicated to the master cabin with ample stowage.
Hull
The water lines are clearly inspired by the Class 40 world, with double rudder, T-keel, and generous water ballasts to have mobile ballast in small crew. Generous but not extreme is the aft edge, while the hull is not totally flat but has a slightly soft curvature to lessen upwind impacts. In the bow, the volumes are almost scow-like, but without going as far as the extreme solutions of racing openers.
