How to adjust the gennaker when cruising

On modern cruising boats, the gennaker is either rigged on the dolphin rail or on a removable bowsprit, and as we saw in the previous episode, stocking hoisting is within the reach of everyone, even an inexperienced small crew.

The gennaker found on cruising boats and catamarans, is what racers call the A2, the most useful for maximizing speed in the Slack gaits in the most common wind conditions. The ideal real working wind angles of a A2 cruising in fact range from 120° to 165° TWA, with real wind speeds from 8 to 20 knots TWS. With the use of a barber and light wind, one can adjust the cruising gennaker even for wider angles, and use it, though not optimized, from 100 to 170 degrees TWA.

The Gennaker is a sail that makes great use of apparent wind, so it is very suitable even in light air. The secret of its adjustment is to leave it to keep it inflated as much as possible.
A constant adjustment will therefore be made to the sheets, or the helmsman, may seek the balance between apparent wind and maximum  lift, with continuous tiller corrections.
