Moro of Venice: she is the boat that most made you dream! Here are who won the three-year super-subscription and your “whys”

The web has decided. And quite sharply, too! It is The Moor of Venice the most loved boat by Italians, with 70 percent of the vote. No dice for Azure.

THE MORO MADE US DREAM
The Moor made our country dream. He made us dream of winning the Cup: for a time, Raul Gardini’s dream became that of “the people.” In the bars, there was no talk of posts, sleepers and Juventus. There was talk of gybes and bowsprits. Thanks to the Moro, so many young people began sailing, enrolled by their parents in courses in the wake of enthusiasm for the Moro’s near feat (winning the Louis Vuitton Cup, and also the fact that to this day it was the only Italian boat to have won a race in the America’s Cup final match against Bill Koch’s America3).

WHO WON THE THREE-YEAR GDV SUPER-SUBSCRIPTION?
So, FORZA MORO! We are preparing a major service-tribute drawing from our extensive archives and collecting testimonies from those in San Diego in 1992 who were aboard that red boat that kept us glued to the TV at night. You can read about it in the October issue of the Sailing Journal. Meanwhile, it’s awards time: we had asked you to send us, from August 1 to September 11, your reasons for voting for one of the myth boats in the competition. We decided to reward the three that excited us the most with a three-year subscription to the Journal of Sailing.

1. Red lion life inspiration
Where and when it all began. Nights awake with eyes closing from sleep until intelligence was lowered. The sounds of the 5-minute bugles at the start waking me up from sleep. The circling seen from the helicopter that mesmerized me. The starts and the heart in the throat at every turn hoping the Moor’s bow was ahead….
The tacking, the buoy turns, the spi hoists with the majestic lion in the foreground, and the gybing battles. The jubilation at the victorious arrivals and the adrenaline rush that wouldn’t let me go back to sleep. Everything I know about sailing, everything I love about sailing and the sea I owe to that wonder and how that Group of people made me dream. Even the longed-for mirage of “my first boat” that happened 2 days ago I owe to the Moor and her exploits, she is small, she is old but I swore eternal love to her and I owe it to that huge red and gold lion that inspired my deep love for the sea and sailing. Thank you Moro…
