Five used boats from 11.35 to 14.20 m
Five fast and comfortable boats to have the most fun while cruising and also try to win at regattas, without having to go through expensive tuning. They are boats born to race (whatever their “age”), while in total comfort. We present them in ascending order of length. A safe used car: guarantees the Sailing Newspaper!
X-37 – 11.35 m – Fast and comfortable. Jeppesen’s word
The first of the used “fast cruiser” boats that we propose is an X-37 (11.35 x 3.48 m), which was designed by Niels Jeppesen in 2004 and remained in production until 2010, with a total of 148 hulls launched.
The boat’s “racing” vocation-a trademark of X-Yachts, a historic Danish shipyard-is betrayed by its ratio of sail area (69.77 sq. m.) to displacement (6.4 t.). A boat you will have fun with, already marked by a certain easy sailing (maneuvers deferred in the cockpit, easy handling even with a small crew) and which was offered in three different configurations below deck. Two cabins and two bathrooms, two cabins and one bathroom, three cabins and one bathroom.
The model we offer is from 2005 and is in excellent condition. This is an X-37 that has had one owner, optimized and winner of many races at the highest level, but most comfortable in cruising configuration.
Nova 37 – 11.43 m – Fast, Lightweight, Made in Italy
We continue with the second of the boats used in the review, staying on the 37-foot size. We are talking about a Nova 37 (11.43 x 3.60 m). The boat was built starting in 1994 by the Pesaro-based Costruzioni Nautiche Novelli Teodorico shipyard with the ambition of being a fast cruiser.
Not surprisingly, the displacement is extremely small (4.6 t), the sail plan more than decent (72 sq. m.), and the hull is designed to have a small wetted surface area. In fact, the hull, from stern to bow, is characterized by flat, wide sections with thin bow entrances. The bulb, on the other hand, has a rather odd, almost “boomerang” shape: this solution was designed to reduce the boat’s tendency to pitch, especially when sailing at an angle.
Hull and deck are made of termanto sandwich with fiberglass skins and polyester resin. This type of construction makes the boat well insulated. The cockpit is protected and has a central rudder. Very large transom with a real XXL swim platform.
Below deck the music changes and it feels like being, in every way, aboard a comfortable cruiser. Square, kitchen, chart corner are generous. Two double cabins and a spacious bathroom complete the layout.
The model for sale, visible in Rimini, is from 2003. Some work has recently been done such as replacing the service batteries and all the sea outlets.
Freya 45 – 13.31 m- A Sparkman & Stephens gem.
We continue with the third of the day’s used boats. A “classic boat” par excellence. A Freya 45 (13.31 x 3.56 m) , designed by Studio Sparkman & Stephens in 1972, was born as an evolution of the first series of Freyas, and built by the Benello Shipyard in Livorno, Italy in 1973 in airex sandwich, under the direct supervision of designer Olin Stephens.
In the year 1991 it underwent a first restoration, and a second one took place in the year 2004, at the Tomei Shipyard in Viareggio. The boat has always carried out exciting competitive activities until 2011 resulting in multiple victories.
The boat, which can be seen in Marsala, is powered by Vetus (42 horsepower), has teak interior and play of cruising and racing sails, Reckmann furling, new upholstery, current rigging for cruising and racing.
X-452 – 13.92 m – For comfortable and fast sailing
We stay on the 45-footer, and again return to designer Niels Jeppesen. The fourth of the used boats for sale on our classifieds market is a great classic signed Jeppesen. An X-452 (13.92 x 4.25 m) cruiser/racer in production from 1986 to 1992.
A beautiful boat, more cruising-oriented despite the decidedly “IOR” shapes with the maximum beam amidships and narrower transom. But beware: it is still an X, with which you can take some good performance satisfaction.
A variety of layouts were offered, including three- and four-cabin versions, which became popular in the Mediterranean.
The model we propose, from 1991, has undergone a great deal of refitting work. It is equipped with Cariboni mast, North Sail sails, spinnaker, Yanmar 63 hp motor. The anti-osmosis treatment was performed in 2020 with a full five-year warranty. The rigging was overhauled in 2018, the electronics are from 2016.
Used boats. Sydney 46 – 14.20 m – Whistle if it spins this fireball!
We close our review of used boats with a cruiser that is really, really “fast.” And for sale is a fast Sydney 46 (14.20 x 4.10) that the Australian shipyard Bashford International built starting in 1997 to designs by Murray, Burns and Dovell.
This is a boat that is at its best in offshore sailing, and it is no coincidence that the Sydney is often featured in “long” races such as the Sydney Hobart or the Rolex Middle Sea Race. It weighs just over 8 tons for a sail plan of 104.98 square meters.
The cockpit, “open” in open oceanic style, has dual wheelhouses. If the boat, on the outside, has a decidedly “race” look, below deck it offers everything you might need for comfortable cruising. Three cabins, one bathroom, galley, dinette, chart table.
The boat for sale is located in La Spezia and is from 2004, in excellent condition and with a “pedigree” full of successes in the most important regattas in the Mediterranean. It is equipped with several games of racing sails, has a newly developed Yanmar engine, and the electronic instrumentation is state of the art. The interior is embellished with Alcantara upholstery.
