Stocking gennaker hoisting is the theme of the new video-episode of SAIL School. The gennaker is the sail that has replaced the spinnaker on all modern cruising boats, and the stocking is the solution for the cruiser that allows for easy hoisting and lowering, even when solo.
What the stocking gennaker looks like
The sock is a now-standard accessory on all cruising boats: it is a long, lightweight fabric sock with two ends. The halyard point, enclosed, to which the halyard is attached from the inside. The base of the canza, often accompanied by a rigid oval fiberglass structure that facilitates the entry of the sail during the lowering of the canza.
A loop line system, which allows the base of the stocking to be raised to the penning point for hoisting, and returned to the deck for lowering.
How to hoist with the stocking
The gennaker stocking allows even one person to rig and hoist gennaker without messing up, because the maneuver most feared by the cruiser, is broken down into several steps, which can be carried out calmly:
- The gennaker is stowed in the sack already in its stocking, which keeps it stretched out and ready for hoisting.
- With the gennaker enclosed in its stocking, you rig tack and sheet, avoiding the risk of a sail catching wind when it is not yet ready to be hoisted.
- The halyard is hoisted, and the gennaker remains enclosed in its sock, there is duque no risk of the sail catching on the spreaders during hoisting.
- It rests at the grand slack and acts on the stocking, which is picked up at the head of it. The sail unfolds progressively, without tearing.
