Increasing sail performance is the theme of the new video-episode of SAIL School. Roberto Westermann explains how to do it aboard a cruising boat to improve sail efficiency and make the boat go faster.
How to increase the performance of sails
Roberto Westermann’s experience suggests that the secret to increasing sail performance on a cruising boat is to Constantly adjust them. From his long experience of racing and long sailing, it became clear that sails are often not utilized to their fullest, because the adjustment of up is either very uncomfortable or very tiring. Here then
- Simplify maneuvering, even on cruising boats, if a maneuver is simple and straightforward, it will come naturally to even a less experienced crew to adjust it continuously, identifying the right adjustment.
- Use continuous sliding bow trolley, which is much more practical and faster than the classic button trolley.
- Reduce stresses by adding demultiplying blocks or decreasing friction.
- The mainsheet, can be demultiplied by doubling the fiddle blocks, one main, and one secondary for fine adjustments. In the case of the video, we arrive at a demultiplier of 24 to 1.
