The secrets of sails, explained by the sailmaker: maintenance
Sun rays and salt spray are the worst enemies of your sailing equipment. In this video, Roberto Westermann explains the secrets and the proper maintenance to do to protect them from the elements and how to store them during the winter .
- Disarm the sails at least once a year, and wash them with fresh water
- Always keep the sail in the shade, the mainsail should be well stowed in the easy-bag, and the genoa or jib, should have a generous anti-UV band.
- Do not keep the genoa halyard and mainsail base under tension.
- The genoa meoli should be let go before winding.
- If the sails are folded, they should be folded randomly, to avoid having the fold always in the same place.
