The right maneuver to let go of the mooring with a sailboat is one that is thought out and prepared in advance by the skipper by evaluating space, wind and sequence of maneuver. In the seventh video-episode of SAIL School we look at how to deal with planning and getting our boat out of port.

The right maneuver to let go of the mooring.

Maneuvering in port to let go of the mooring is often the most complex of the entire sailing cruise, especially in the case of wind, charter boat, and a harbor with limited space. If you get something wrong, you risk doing extensive damage to other boats. The proper maneuver to let go of the mooring must be prepared by the skipper, and the crew must be informed of it, either to aid the maneuver or aware not to disturb at this sensitive stage.

  • Checking the available space in the body of water and the wind direction
  • Drop the tops and sotovento tow, i.e., those “not working. The trappa must go down.
  • Prepare to launch the lines ashore, bringing them already out of the gunwale
  • The last one to be let go is usually the upwind stern line, because you give the stern line time to go down, and with the engine idling forward and the stern line upwind still at the cleat, you can compensate for the action of the wind and let go when the bow is in the right direction.
