Checking the rigging, shrouds, ruffles and cotter pins key elements of the fixed rigging, on a cruising boat is an easy task that can avoid disaster. In the sixth video-episode of SAILING SCHOOL we see how to check shrouds, stays, cotter pins and halyards at the points of greatest wear.
How to control rigging on the cruising boat
Checking rigging, fixed and current maneuvers, is a good practice to do at the beginning of every outing.
Regarding the fixed rigging , the first thing to check are the turnbuckles , which are those double-screw devices used to string the shrouds. You have to check for the presence of all the cotter pins, and the safety rings, which are used to lock the rigging from unscrewing under load. In fact, one of the most frequent accidents is due to the lack of one of these small metal rings; when the shrouds are downwind, and therefore unloaded, the cotter pin can slip out, and at the tack change, you risk dismasting if the full-stroke rigging unscrews.
The rigging, should be taped both to prevent the loss of the cotter pins and to avoid having sharp metal points in view. Shrouds should be checked at the point of ‘engagement in the terminal, the presence of rust or wear on one of the cable strands, is synonymous with serious deterioration of the cable.
The video below also shows how to check some current maneuvers such as the terminals of a gennaker halyard at the point of greatest wear, which is the terminal knot.
