5G connectivity on the boat
5G connectivity on the boat

For the past few years, accomplice to the spread of new 4G/5G technologies and competition from low-cost operators, we have become accustomed to having tariff plans with hundreds of gigs per month, sometimes unlimited, available on our smartphones for about ten euros per month. Thanks to the hotspot function of our smartphones, connecting to the Internet while traveling with a computer, tablet, or other device has become increasingly easy, but things often get complicated on a boat.

5G devices to connect from the boat

If near the coast the coverage is sufficient, as soon as we move beyond 3-4 miles, the small antennas of our smartphones are not powerful enough to provide us with a stable and fast connection. In this guide we have selected for you the latest 5G devices to install on board to surf the web even on a boat.

The 5G and WiFi antennas for your boat

POYNTING EPNT 4

5G Poynting EPNT-4 Antenna

Poyting’s EPNT-4 comprises four 5G/LTE broadband cellular antennas with excellent gain across all frequencies in a single watertight housing. Wi-Fi antennas operate in dual band with a peak gain of 5 dBi. A router can be installed directly inside, which will be powered via network cable using the POE (Power Over Ethernet) method. Having the router close to the antennas offers the key advantage of zeroing out all coaxial cable losses, which are often very significant, and greatly simplifying installation. EPNT-4 is also fully saltwater protected and UV-resistant, with IP67 and IK10 rating. You can find it here

Inside the dome are 4 cellular antennas for 4X4 MIMO, 2 Wi-Fi for 2X2 MIMO, and a GPS antenna. The housing is rated IP67, making it suitable for continuous use outdoors and in marine environments. A single Gigabit Ethernet port provides a wired data connection and power via PoE. The dome has two SIM card slots. By adding the optional SIM Injector, the router will be able to support 8 more SIM cards, bringing the total number of standby operators to 10. The built-in Qualcomm X55 modem does not allow the combination of low and medium 5G bands, a technology that will be implemented by network operators in the future to achieve higher speeds and greater range.
