Sailing Jackets: the best high-tech models
Sportswear brands have always focused on new materials, and to invest in research and development, to innovate their garments. Among them, sailing apparel brands were among the first to look for waterproof but comfortable and high-performance fabrics that could keep you not only dry but also warm. That is why in the 1980s it was not uncommon to find motorcyclists in the city wearing sailing jackets. And one of the best ways to protect themselves from wind, rain and cold, for those in big cities who reach the office by scooter, is still a sailing jacket. Here are what are the 8 best sailing jackets to best cope with the harsh winter in the city.
Hi-tec sailing jackets – North Sails – Southern Ocean Jacket

This jacket earned North Sails a 2022 DAME Award nomination. The design of the garment has been optimized, and thanks to innovative materials such as TightWeave and Gore-Tex Pro waterproofing and breathability are guaranteed, even in rainy and windy conditions. On this model, the back laminated area is maximized, reaching 95 centimeters in length, and the reinforcement is attached directly to the garment without seams, preventing water and air from penetrating inside.
Murphy&Nye – Crew Waikato Jacket

An iconic model from Murphy&Nye: Waikato. An ultra-lightweight, breathable jacket made of three-layer polyester technical fabric that provides perfect protection from water and wind. In addition to the side pockets, there is a protected inner pocket, and there is also a rubberized piping on the bottom that makes the jacket stick without letting air or water in from underneath. Printed on the back of the jacket is the brand’s reflective logo.
Slam – Active Winter Hooded Short Jacket

Slam’s Active Winter Hooded Short Jacket is one of the highlights of the newly introduced Foil Collection. It is the ideal garment to wear on boats, in the mountains and in the city to face the cold season. The recycled polyester outer layer is completely waterproof and breathable, while the warm filling is made of recycled batting. The slim cut follows the design of the Foil collection, an element echoed in the cut that highlights the two zippered pockets on the sides of the jacket.
Sailing Jackets: Montura – Conero Jacket

Made of stretch nylon fabric, Montura’s Conero Jacket was developed to seek the best performance at sea. The 3-layer Gore-Tex fabric forms a smooth, waterproof surface, tested to withstand 28,000 columns of water, but also breathable, with a RET of less than 6. The jacket is very practical in a variety of conditions, on boats because it stands up excellently to different types of stress, in the city because it keeps you dry and protects you from the wind.
Plastimo – Softshell

Plastimo’s softshell is a polyester and spandex jacket that is very warm thanks to the polar microfleece lining. In addition to being lightweight and soft on the inside, the jacket protects against the cold even in prohibitive conditions. The fabric mix that forms the outer lining resists moisture and abrasion excellently, qualities that allow the garment to be worn for extended periods without affecting comfort and fit.
Sailing Jackets: Musto – Evolution Gore-Tex Shore Jacket 2.0

The composition of this jacket allows you to protect yourself from the rain and wear a comfortable garment in any situation. The two outer layers are made of water-repellent Gore-Tex, as are the zippers and the hood, which can be folded into the collar. On the inside, however, the PrimaLoft Rise layer provides comfort to the wearer and preserves body heat. The sleek, minimal look allows the garment to be worn in the city as well, enabling all-around use of the jacket.
Decathlon – Offshore 900 Jacket

The Offshore range jacket from Tribord (below), Decathlon’s dedicated sailing brand, provides excellent waterproofing and breathability, thanks to water-repellent fabric and zippers. The jacket is water-repellent and able to keep you dry, and the high fleece collar and adjustable hood also protect very well from wind. The jacket was developed in collaboration with sailors from different classes such as Class 40 and Mini 6.50.
Sailing Jackets: SeaStorm – New Match Racing Jacket

New Match Racing Jacket (above) is a jacket designed to be worn by sailors who are ready to take on even challenging races, whatever the weather conditions. The two-layer microporous fabric with Cordura reinforcements offers maximum fit while the water-repellent outer layer provides effective water protection. The yellow hood is retractable, high-visibility, and can be adjusted both front and back. The jacket is also great for winter protection in the city.
