Race between the buoys, win the ARC Plus, go cruising and, why not, even travel the world, all with the same boat. Dream or reality? There is one boat that is really doing all this, it is Vincenzo Adessi’s Mylius 60 Fra Diavolo, which we have often appreciated on Italian and international race courses in recent years.
Mylius 60 Fra Diavolo – Around the World and the ARC
Fra Diavolo set off with its owner on a round-the-world trip, but given the boat’s sporty nature Adessi decided to approach this adventure in a special way, starting the journey by participating in the ARC Plus. This is the sister transatlantic of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, but unlike it, it takes place in two stages. The Mylius 60 Fra diavolo won both of them, although it participated with a somewhat cruise-like trim in terms of weights on board, as Vincenzo Adessi is in fact facing a long journey around the world that will continue in the coming months and that is recounted on the Fra Diavolo Sailing Team facebook page.
Super Boat DNA
As is often the case with the Italian shipyard’s production, this boat was tailored to the needs of its owner. Vincenzo Adessi came from experience on a smaller boat, the Mylius 14e55, and wished to go up a band but with a specific request: “that it be the biggest boat with which I can go around the Mediterranean just with my wife and grandchildren…and the smallest that will allow me to participate in the IMA world championship in the Mini Maxi class.”
Fra Diavolo was launched in 2014 and belongs to the first generation of Mylius 60 (the design was later updated by the shipyard in 2017), it represents a perfect example of a Mylius fast cruiser-racer. A boat with an excellent ratio of displacement to sail area, thanks to carbon construction and a decidedly modern and current sail plan with strong vertical development.
The hull has soft, edgeless shapes, with rounded stern volumes, the bow ones sharper but still consistent to allow effective wave passage, not only upwind but also at the leads. All this on a high-draft, 3-meter T-keel, which is a guarantee of performance in all conditions.
The deck rigging layout has the two halyard winches in the classic position on the deckhouse, while the two primary winches are slightly further back than the position they have on racing boats in order to be able to allow comfortable handling even with a small crew in cruise mode.
Fra Diavolo has a dinette with a classic layout. The master cabin, accessed through a side door, has a double bed on the side, a settee on the opposite side, and bathroom with separate shower. The aft cabins are twin, with separate beds and private bathrooms. The interior is of water-painted teak essence; the wall cabinets and cabinets in the dinette are in metallic paint.
