In the first installment of this column dedicated to the world of catamarans we told you about the 5 “ways” to enjoy cruising on 2 or 3 hulls, today we are going to see instead what the state of the art of the market is, going to analyze the proposals of the shipyards.
We start in the 11- to 12-meter range, where we find proposals from Excess, Lagoon, C-Cat, Fountaine Pajot, Bali and Nautitech.
Excess /
Excess 11
–
(11.33 x 6.59 m)
Stable, easily maneuverable and with a good weight/sail area ratio, this 11-meter boat aims to be an ideal vessel for comfortable cruising. the shipyard in addition to the standard version offers one with an enlarged sail plan, upwind the Pulse version offers 85sqm against 77sqm.
The deckhouse is fully panoramic, the rigging arrangement is designed not to disturb the aft living area with a series of solutions to bring the sheet ropes to the outer areas.
excess /
Excess 12
–
(11.73 x 6.73 m)
A boat developed on the Lagoon 40 platform and entrusted to the VPLP design team, Nauta Design interiors, to fit the Exceess style. The goal was to change the ratio of sail area to displacement compared to the Lagoons, to make a more performance boat that could attract not only the catamaran-loving public but especially those coming in from monohulls. The outer sections of the hull were then reshaped by VPLP specialists to create a slightly different overall aesthetic, but above all, on the construction, a ton of weight was saved by going to rationalize the interior with a different choice on materials.
LAGOON /
Lagoon 40
–
(11.74 x 6.80 m)
The hull design of this cruising catamaran is entrusted to the VPLP studio, which has designed a generous sail plan by moving the mast even further aft (a trick that comes straight from the world of racing), which, in addition to centralizing the weights, allows for a large triangle in the bow to rig a wide choice of sails such as gennaker and Code O. From the forward cockpit, one can enjoy sailing comfortably lying on sunbeds.
C-Catamarans/C-Cat37 (11.10 x 5.84 m) .
Made in Italy (with the hand of guru Marc Lombard forming the hull) proves that we, too, do well on multihulls. A catamaran dedicated to sport cruising, which can be equipped with adjustable drifts, and has a low displacement. Inside, it is well finished and has a functional saloon for comfortable cruising life, as well as an outside cockpit sheltered by the deckhouse structure.
BALI /
Catsmart
–
(11.76 x 6.46 m)
This is the newest of the models in the range, which with its length becomes the de facto new entry level. The shipyard’s typical solution of the forward cockpit returns; instead, the rigging is deferred to the aft sides, where the wheelhouses are located. The rear cockpit is fully covered and connected directly to the inner square by a glass door. Cabin brightness is provided by a continuous window running along the entire side.
Catamarans: FOUNTAINE PAJOT /
Isla 40
–
(11.93 x 6.63 m)
Designed as always by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design, the designers chose to keep the net at the bow-an interesting solution that contains the boat’s displacement and improves its center of gravity. No real flybridge is provided for the 40 although the rigging and wheelhouse are elevated above the aft cockpit. the cockpit is in fact completely covered. It meets performance instead the volumetry of the bows, which are quite lean and sharp.

FOUNTAINE PAJOT /
Astrea 42
–
(12.58 x 7.20 m)
The Astréa 42 is available in a Maestro version, which features a master suite with private bath and two double cabins with two private baths, or in a Quatuor version, equipped with four double cabins and four private baths. The cat’s success is based on the ingenious inverted bow solution for the hull line, which stands out as the trademark of the series. This innovative feature outlines a sleek and dynamic silhouette, while creating stunning volumes within the boat despite its relatively small overall size, with a length of only 12.58 meters.
NAUTITECH/Nautitech40 (11.98 x 6.91 m)
Designed by Marc Lombard, it has been rethought with a larger sail plan to improve performance and the OPEN concept has been enhanced so that life on board is all on one level. Compared with previous models, a weight saving of 20% has been achieved through vacuum infusion technology.
Catamarans: BALI/Catspace (12.31 x 6.59 m)
The aesthetics of one of Bali’s newest models is that of a modern cruising catamaran that can appeal to the charter market as well, and Bali does not give up what had been one of its workhorses: the front cockpit. A decision dictated by the desire to make the most of outdoor spaces, as also demonstrated by the large flybridge that houses another living area as well as the wheelhouse.
