In 2023 the RS21 World Championship will be in Italy, in Marina di Puntaldia, Sardinia. The RS21 (6.67 x 2.20 m) is definitely the class of the moment, fresh from a world championship (we told you about it here) that gathered more than 40 monotypes. “We set a goal of 70 participating boats“, he told David Casetti, president of the Italian class, at the presentation of the 2023 calendar in Zibido San Giacomo (Milan) at the beautiful location of Castelletto San Giovanni. “But we have already realized that this number is starting to get tight….“.
RS21, the 2023 season
A season, the Italian RS21 season, that promises to be one of great depth both in terms of events and the continued increase in owners and ” thoroughbred” sailors. Meanwhile, a partnership with underwear brand Yamamay is confirmed for 2023 and 2024.
So it will still be RS21 Cup Yamamay planned over five Acts and under the banner of sustainability.
Let’s look at the 2023 stages: Alassio May 5/7, Rimini June 9/7, Torbole July 7/9, Riva del Garda July 24/27 with the Italian Championship also being held, and, the final act, Marina di Puntaldia September 27/30 with the World Championship. In addition, the Torbole and Riva del Garda stages will be valid for the awarding, new for 2023, of the “King Of the Lake” Trophy. To beat will be the “Stenghele” team with Pietro Negri (who, by the way, imports the RS21 to Italy with his NegriNautica) winner of the 2022 edition in the role of “defender.”
At each stop, the class will organize a conference on sea conservation and protection by involving local governments and schools on this important issue.
The World Championships in Gallura
The highlight of the season will be the first World Championship in Italy of the RS21 class: it will be held in Sardinia, Gallura, at the Marina di Puntaldia at the same time as Act 5 of the RS21 Yamamay Cup. An event for which the class expects the participation of more than 70 boats and which will test the organizational machine supported by the great professionalism and expertise of the Marina di Puntaldia with Ceo Marie-Hélène Polo at the helm, which has made itself available to welcome, after the success of the Italian 2022, the RS21 class.
The winners of the 2022 season
The evening in Zibido San Giacomo was an opportunity to award prizes to the winners of the Yamamay RS21 Cup 2022: in the open category, victory went to the aforementioned Stenghele by Pietro Negri, in front of Beyond Freedom of Gianluca Grisoli (winner of the 2022 World Championship) and to Joy By Carlo Brenco. In the Corinthian category (i.e., without professional sailors on board) Vincenzo Liberati’s CodeZero Sailing Team triumphed, followed by Federica Archibugi’s Stick N’ Poke and Liam Willis’ Dark and Stormy.
RS21, sustainability and social engagement
A rich program under the banner of sustainability and “social restitution.” Let’s find out why.
Barbara Cimmino (Head of CSR & Innovation at Yamamay) officially announced during the evening the launch of the clothing line named “RS21 Cup”, developed together with the class, produced from recycled fabrics and distributed throughout the brand’s network; royalty proceeds for the RS21 Cup brand will by mutual agreement be donated to Positive Weight, which deals with Eating Disorders, and Torben Grael’s Projeto Grael, which has been providing free vocational education, including in environmental protection, to 700 young people a year for nearly 25 years.
RS21 Italian Class, also began the process of ISO 20121 certification, first in the World in sailing, for Sustainability Event Management, as well as having confirmed also for 2023 the complete offsetting of residual CO2 emissions of the entire circuit together with Up2You.
In addition, from 2023 REBO Bottle will join the panel of partners with the REBO GO active water bottle that will help clean the sea of plastic.
