It certainly looks like a “battle” of one-designs on the 9 meters is about to break out, as after the announcement of the Cape 31 landing in Italy comes Northern Light Composites’ Ecoracer 30 OD, designed by Matteo Polli. The new project of the Julian start-up will once again have the recyclable hull, and will initiate the Ecoracer Sailing Series, a circuit of 100% sustainable regattas that will start in 2024. Instead, the first hull of the Ecoracer OD will go into the water in Genoa, after it is finished at the Sangiorgio Marine.
Ecoracer 30 OD – Deck, keel, sail plan
The Ecoracer 30 One Design, which will be 9.15 mt long excluding the definiera, an evolution of Polli’s multi-win Corsa 915, features an inverted bow and a stern high above the water whose shapes will become “active” when the hull is heeled, extending its waterline length. This is because the new Ecoracer is a pure One Design but will also be able to be successfully employed in the fee regattas, inshore and offshore, thanks to the signature of ORC hull wizard Matteo Polli.
The boat will be equipped with a telescopic keel, with a draft at 2.30 mt, to facilitate its transport on a trolley, and with the same configuration of rigging and sail plan it will be possible to race in one-design or rating fleets.
The sail plan calls for a square-top mainsail to provide horsepower for the boat even in breezes, low overlap jibs and powerful asymmetrical jibs for carrying gaits, but in case of use in ORC offshore racing it will also be possible to rig it with Code Zero and the like. The displacement will be 1,800 kg.
The boat will be launched on the market at a starting price of 120,000 euros.
Ecoracer 30 OD – A super development team
Nlcomp also announced part of the team who will carry on, with Fabio Bignolini in the role of general manager, the development of Ecoracer 30 One Design. Sergio Caramel, a talented young helmsman in the one design world and Public Relations Officer of nlcomp, Will oversee the optimization of shipboard maneuvers and the testing phases of the first hull.
With him will be Francis Rubagotti, a professional with a long track record in the world of one-design classes and beyond, who will also be the commercial point of reference for the new class, and Roberto Spata, one of the most highly regarded professional sailors in the offshore sailing world, who will be responsible for boat optimization and class regulations. Regarding technical construction aspects, Andrea Paduano Will be responsible for the composite and Paul Dassi The person in charge of structural engineering along with Roberto Baraccani who will follow the construction phases with Piernicola Paoletti e Alexander Ponds.
The organization of the Ecoracer Sailing Series will instead be taken care of by Luca Rizzotti, founder of Foiling Week and a lifelong focus on issues of sustainability and performance in sailing.
