Thanks to “Italy Viewed from the Sea – Discover Where I’m Taking You,” the project that sees Enit and Assonautica united to promote boat tourism, the entire segment of sailing vacations in Italy is being relaunched.
BOATING VACATIONS WHAT A PASSION
The official portal for vacations in Italy, managed by Enit – Ente Nazionale Italiano Turismo (Italian National Tourist Board), Italia.it encompasses in a highly articulated portal many of the travel proposals and suggestions available to all tourists, national and international, along but also around the peninsula. Divided into broad categories-“slow tourism,” “landscapes,” “active tourism”-now finally today these proposals also make room for the world of sailing and the sea.
In fact, Assonautica Italiana has been entrusted with a plan to revitalize boating along the Italian coast that can push the enhancement and promotion of nautical tourism. “Italy Seen from the Sea – Discover Where I Take You”: is the name of this project that includes a range of nautical routes and itineraries to discover the immense historical, cultural, artistic, naturalistic and enogastronomic heritage of Italy’s coastal hinterland and inland waters.
“At last,” explains Assonautica President Giovanni Acampora, “nautical tourism is being promoted as a real tourism segment, like the food and wine or open air ones, allowing local governments to allocate more resources to port tourism facilities as well. Ports and landings thus become both accommodation facilities and gateways to tourist destinations, a point of contact with nautical and tourism service operators.”
BOATING VACATIONS: 16 ROUTES ALONG THE BOOT
For the “Italy as seen from the sea” project, 16 itineraries have already been created, covering Italy and the islands, as well as inland waters: available in both Italian and English, they are published on Italia.it and will go into the viaggio.italia.it portal. These are not portolans, but guides and descriptions of a coastal or lake tract, designed to entice the tourist to navigation and discovery of the area; in fact, they contain historical hints, useful information for mooring and shore services, indications of marine natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Starting anti-clockwise from the northwest, we begin with “The Poets’ Route” in Liguria from San Remo to Santo Stefano Magra for 110 miles. Then there is “The Route of the Etruscans” from Marina di Pisa to Cala Galera, 130 miles passing through the Tuscan Archipelago. It continues with “The Route of the Caesars” from Civitavecchia to Gaeta, with the Pontine Islands, and “The Route of the Sibyls” from Nisida to Cape Palinuro, passing through Ischia, Capri and Procida. In Sardinia here is “The Nuraghi Route,” with 260 miles of sailing. Then from Sapri to Tropea there is the 150-mile-long “Norman Route,” such as “The Route of the Gods,” in Sicily from Agrigento to Syracuse, and “The Strait Route” from Palermo to Messina. From the Ionian for “The Grecanica Route” between Crotone and Taranto to the Adriatic for “The Levant Route” from Otranto to the Gargano. The “Trabocchi Route” between Molise and Abruzzo is followed by “The Salt Route” from Porto Recanati to Comacchio. “The Route of the Doges,” from Venice to Trieste, starts in Veneto. We move on to “inland waters” starting from Garda with the itinerary “La Centomiglia del Garda” and ending with “Rotta sul Fiume di Mezzo,” navigation on the Canalbianco from Rovigo to Trecenta.
