Lovers of boats “made in Scandinavia” prick up your ears because there is something new that is being produced. Called CR 490 DS, it is Swedish but not the “classic” old-fashioned Swedish-style bluewater with a central cockpit where the solidity of construction is also betrayed by the shapes.
CR 490 DS – 15.50 x 4.71 m
The CR 490 DS (15.50 x 4.71 m) will be the new flagship of the historic Orust Island shipyard owned by the Rutgersson family, which has now become a brand of the Swedish Sweden Yachts Group (which also owns the famous Sweden Yachts and Malö Yachts brands). Designed by the British firm BRYD (Ben Rogerson Yacht Design), which also has experience in the world of powerboats, this is a boat with a distinctive design.
Deck
Starting with the blanket. Forward of the mast between space is a decidedly clean and “flush” deck, with a dolphin halyard at the bow that doubles as an anchor snout and forward tacking point for Code Zero-type rollable sails or asymmetrical sails. The only element to break the continuity is the self-tacking jib carriage.
Aft of the mast the situation changes. We get to a prominent, raised deckhouse (typical of deck saloons, the name DS is indicative), but made less “invasive” by the choice not to have hard corners and thanks to rounded shapes. The design of the aft cockpit, which features a double wheelhouse with aft benches, has been developed in such a way that it is well protected, including by a glass windshield (a very “motoring” solution). All maneuvers are manageable from the cockpit. In terms of the lines, a hull with a vertical bow and stern fore and aft was chosen, without the presence of edges.
Interior
The interior is characterized, of course, by the prominent elevated living room with 270-degree panoramic views and plenty of natural light.
As a standard layout, the boat provides a master cabin forward and a single crew cabin amidships, with double and single cabins or service rooms incorporating washing and stowage facilities aft. But there are numerous alternative options.
