The excellent RS21 World Championship organized in early November in Croatia was a nice confirmation of the viability of the one-design that everyone wants. Merit for an apt design that everyone, professionals and enthusiasts alike, likes. And an Italian team won!

RS21, the reasons for success

Good first. More than 4o crews enlivened the first edition of the RS21 monotype(6.67 x 2.20 m) World Championship held in Biograd Na Moru, on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. There were more than 40 crews for over 160 sailors on the water from England, Belgium, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, France, Croatia of course, and even Australia.

Among them are. 18 all-Italian boats (as is the winning team, composed of Gianluca Grisoli, Andrea Casale, Fabio Gridelli and Giorgio Tortarolo, is Italian), a substantial number that says a lot about the success that immediately found in our country this Sporty keelboat monotype (with electric motor), easily trolleyable, fun to drive and economical to run. After all, in Italy itself, the RS21 class was already widely accepted in 2021 at the European Championships held in Malcesine on Lake Garda. But why does RS21 appeal so much and not only to Italians? What are your strengths and how do you get on this fine sports circuit?

A high-performance yet easy-to-manage sportboat

It was 2020 when the British shipyard RS Sailing, the world’s largest builder of dinghies, launched this very interesting new sportboat with a pronounced sporting identity, a “green” soul and a vocation for economy and simplicity of operation. A hull equipped with a retractable keel to be easily transported on a trolley, 6.67 meters long, 2.2 meters wide and with a sail area of 64.6 square meters. It is conducted with a crew of four (no trapeze) with a total weight between 300 and 365 kg. Options also include equipping it with a high-performance, zero-impact on the environment ePropulsion electric motor.

But above all, the RS21 immediately presented itself as a sport one-design ready to develop a beautiful and engaging international class featuring professional crews and ordinary enthusiasts. All attracted by a sportboat with high performance and low running costs, as well as a packed calendar of events held in beautiful locations and animated by a fleet of friends.

Italian importer speaks: “I liked the RS21 right away.”

When he was offered to become the Italian importer of RS21, the owner of Negrinautica Pietro Negri immediately took up the challenge with enthusiasm. What’s more, in this first edition of the world championship he also took a fine second place in the company of Giovanni Meloni, Niccolò Bianchi and Camilla Cordero di Montezemolo. “It was a good world championship, well organized, with many strong crews, ” says Pietro Negri. so much so that in the end four boats were on the line for victory. There were also quite harsh conditions, one trial even being run in 30 knots. So we had a lot of fun“.

After all, a very rich calendar of competitions already revolves around the RS21. “In Italy,” Negri further explains. in 2021 we were the first to develop the class of which Davide Casetti is president. Already that year we organized an Italian circuit, the RS21 Cup, and then the European in Malcesine. In 2022 we are repeating the Italian Cup with 5 stages. We also created a nice format with well-attended regattas and shore events. In addition, we have chosen to be supported only by companies that promote sustainability, such as Yamamay. Let’s say that the boat is a nice design but represents only 50 percent of the project. The other 50 percent is class and regattas“.

Don’t want to purchase the RS21 right away? Rent it for the regatta!

But what are the strengths of the RS21? “I think they are the same features that pleasantly surprised me when I first tried it,” Peter clarifies. It is a boat that gives beautiful sensations, it is light, fast and above all does not require much effort in handling. It is easy, intuitive and extremely fun in both strong winds and light airs. It immediately wins you over from the first outings“.

Then if you do not want to buy the boat right away, there is the possibility of participating in races and with a “chartered” RS21.We offer a turnkey service,” explains Pietro Negri. With the boat complete with used but racing sails. We take it with the trolley to the race course and when the crew has finished, they hand it back to us without worrying about anything. The cost of the charter is about 800 euros per day. Let’s say to face a first season, test the boat and get to know it well before maybe facing the purchase is a good opportunity“.

RS21 also appeals to young and environmentally friendly people

The RS21 class caters not only to professional crews but also to many enthusiasts and can be a perfect platform for rookies to enter the world of racing. As demonstrated by the experience at this world championship of Nox Oceani, a young sailing team founded by entrepreneur Andrea Nocella and his wife Francesca de Natale whose mission is to convey respect for the environment and social commitment through sailing.

In Croatia Nox Oceani fielded two crews racing under the colors of the Yacht Club Cala dei Sardi: one composed of Andrea Nocella himself along with his son Giorgio, who at only 10 years old is already a promising Optimist helmsman, Alessandro Balzani, Giuseppe Marras and Costantino Cossu. The other crew fielded Laura Murineddu, Andrea De Matteis, Francesco Columbano, Riccardo Serra and Ferdinand Palomba, all aged between 13 and 21 who were the youngest in the fleet.

Beyond the standings in Croatia for us it was a victory and a wonderful experience,” says Nox Oceans President Luca Giovannini. Our boys were able to compete with professional sailors of the highest level, including Gabriele Benussi, Lorenzo Bressani and so on. The conditions were also tough, with winds of over 25 knots and strong seas. We at Nox Oceans want to spread a strong message of environmental friendliness through sailing, and it is no coincidence that we chose the RS21, a sport boat built using recycled and recyclable materials“.

In short, that of the RS21 class is off to a truly explosive start and seems well launched to win over future generations of sailors as well. We wish them well!
