It is the Personal Locator Beacon launched by Ocean Signal that won the overall DAME Design Award 2022 (as well as the win in the “security” category) at Mets in Amsterdam. It is called
PLB3 RescueME
and packs so many useful features inside a small device. What convinced the jury was the high level of technologies built into the product and the innovative design.
The DAME Design Award is the annual worldwide award presented at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) in Amsterdam. Among the nominees chosen by the jury each year are the world’s best boating accessories, combining design and functionality, divided into various categories (electronics, harbor and boatyard equipment, deck equipment, sails and rigging, clothing, safety).
Ocean Signal PLB3 RescueME – Smart features to save your life
Inside the new PLB3 is an AIS device for man overboard detection, a GPS, Cospas-Sarsat locator and Galileo Return Link service , plus it is equipped with visible and infrared beacon lights. RescueME, when activated, launches an alarm by transmitting an AIS MOB signal to all vessels within VHF range. In addition to indicating a MOB (man over board, man overboard) emergency, the device transmits the location to a worldwide network of search and rescue satellites, ensuring high chances of rescue for survivors with an operation exceeding 24 hours. The device is activated when in contact with water or when inflating the life jacket it is paired with.
Plus there isOcean Signal’s dedicated app, which can be downloaded to any smartphone and tablet, and thanks to NFC it connects to PLB3. Near Field Communication technology allows the app to be used to test the PLB3 with a cell phone, keeping an eye on the status of the battery-which lasts 5 years-and the operation of all transmitters at all times. Leveraging NFC technology allows the smartphone’s battery to be used rather than the receiver’s, making it possible not to “waste” battery power to monitor the beacon.

The design of the PLB3 is designed to elongate and streamline its shape, allowing the locator to fit inside life jackets as well. Thanks to the built-in clip, the RescueME also attaches very easily to pants, or to accessories such as bags and backpacks.
