The couple formed by Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti is no longer standing still. Since winning the gold medal at the Olympics on the Nacra 17, the two sailors have continued to rack up a string of successes and have also won several personal awards. And now they have been honored as world sailors of the year!
Our sailors of the year win world sailor of the year
We had honored them in May along with Ganga Bruni with the TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year, for the historic Olympic feat in Tokyo that had thrilled us just a few months earlier. In July the Italian pair climbed to the top of Europe, winning the Nacra 17 European Championship in Aarhus, Denmark. Then in September came the satisfaction of also winning the Nacra 17 World Championship in Halifax, Canada, the second of their careers after the one in 2018. On yesterday, Oct. 25, 2022, the two Italian sailors were also presented with another very important personal award.
During the evening organized in Yas Marina (UAE) Ruggero Tita was presented with the award for the male category, and Caterina Banti was given the award for the female category. Tita beat out competition from the other candidates who reached the final stage-Jean-Baptiste Bernaz (France), Nicolas Goyard (France) Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken (Netherlands). Instead, Banti got the better of Hélène Noesmoen (France), Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz (Netherlands).
The Rolex World Sailor of the Year, an award given by World Sailing , the World Sailing Federation, has been one of the most important awards for Olympic sailors since its inception in 1994. It is uniquely satisfying to see Italian sailing standing on the top step of the world podium, thanks to the achievements of Ruggero and Caterina over the past two years, and the work done throughout the previous years.
