Good news: Puglia will be the first region in Italy to ban single-use plastic and plastic bags from its beaches. Other Italian entities such as Senigallia (Ancona) and Lampedusa have already adopted such ordinances, but Puglia is the first regional entity to move toward increasingly sustainable tourism.
The region is two years ahead of the European Union directive that will ban single-use plastics, thus doing away with plastic items such as straws, cutlery, cups and plates that make up 49 percent of marine litter.
From next summer therefore, 200 Apulian bathers, realizing that separate collection is not enough, will reduce the consumption of this type of plastic, which will be replaced by biodegradable cellulose containers and tools, and use only paper bags.
In recent days, it was Regional Budget Councillor with responsibility for maritime domains Raffaele Piemontese who announced the ordinance, which is the result of an agreement reached with representatives of beach unions and environmental associations.
Piemontese himself declared, “In agreement with the president of the region Michele Emiliano, I proposed to the representatives of the bathing establishments, who unanimously agreed, the decision to say stop as of this summer season to plastic on our lidos, in favor instead of compostable and disposable material. This is a valuable achievement for the future balance of our marine environment.”
