Are you warming up your mice? In two days the TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year, the most prestigious award in Italian sailing, starts again. There were 100 of them, thanks to your 19,000 votes on the new site http://velistadellanno.giornaledellavela.com/ 50 are left: also in this second phase, from 1 p.m. March 1 to 12 p.m. March 14, you will be able to cast a maximum of three votes (after entering your e-mail address), whether all to a single candidate or spread over several names you will decide. The 25 highest vote-getters will pass the round.
TWO GOOD REASONS TO VOTE
There is not only the “emotional” reason why so many of you voted this year: know that among all those who voted in at least one of the stages and who show up at the Evening of Champions at the TAG Heuer VELAFestival in Santa Margherita Ligure (May 3, at 7 pm: here you will find out who won the TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year and all the other prizes), we will draw a valuable TAG Heuer Aquaracer, the Sailor of the Year chronograph, and a boat vacation provided by Globesailor through its partner Sail Italia.
FIND OUT WHO ARE THE 50 SAILORS OF THE YEAR STILL IN THE RACE
In the meantime, we share with you the beautiful stories of passion and sacrifice of two candidates who made a splash in the first phase…
THE BOWMAN’S REVENGE
Marco Carpinello (677 votes in the first phase), class of 1981 from Turin, a bowman by profession. In 2018 he won aboard the Reichel/Pugh 66 Alive the overall classification of the legendary Rolex Sydney to Hobart and was aboard the Melges 40 Inga with which he finished third on the season circuit.
He told us, “It all started in 1992, following a cruise my father took in ’91 with a friend of his. With the boom of the Moro di Venezia I began to watch the races on television with my dad and his friend, immediately finding in the bowman of the Moro, Alberto Fantini, what I wanted to do on a sailboat. So I started with an Optimist course, then the Fireball with my dad, from there the jump to bigger boats, with the first major boarding on the Mumm 30 Joe Fly.
The first title was the European on Massimo Mezzaroma’s Farr 40 Neron. That crew, for me, became a second family! Then came the first world championship and many other regattas until perhaps the most beautiful victory, last year’s Sydney Hobart.”
SWEATING SEVEN SHIRTS TO EARN EVERY MILE
Matthew Sericano (729 votes in the first round), class of 1997, pure oceanic talent. In his first season in Mini 650, at age 21, he became Mediterranean champion of the class. He won the X2 ranking of the Palermo-Montecarlo on the small Grand Soleil 34 Aigylion sailed in doubles with Alberto Bona. His dream? To participate in the next Mini Transat. His spirit? That of someone who is used to rolling up his sleeves and working hard to earn every mile.
Since he did not have a boat of his own, he took over the Mini 650 Base Camp, an older design that needed a lot of work. Said and done. Matthew with his team got their hands dirty and as soon as the boat was put back in the water, he won the 222 Mini Solo, the first event of a season as a leading player and often on the podium, not only with Base Camp. A beautiful story of sacrifice, passion and talent.
