Sensational: just hours after voting opened for the second phase of the TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year, Giampaolo and Basak Gentili, owners of Yakamoz (Ovni 41), winners of the first phase, are dropping out of the game. They explain the reasons in a lengthy Facebook post.
Here is our answer.
OPEN LETTER TO GIAMPAOLO AND BASAK
Dearest Giampaolo and Basak,
we are sincerely sorry about your choice not to participate in the second round of voting for the Sailor of the Year, which starts today at 1 p.m. on http://velistadellanno.giornaledellavela.com/.
We respect your decision but want to clarify that our TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year is not a “contest” as you wrote. It is not a race, it is not a regatta, it is not a competition.
The TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year is a popular vote in which sailing enthusiasts in all its forms express their preference regarding dozens of sailor stories that the editorial staff of the Sailing Newspaper, aided by readers, has chosen from the most significant of the season.
So there is no pure competitive spirit, just a motive to enhance the good stories of the sailing world and reward the popular ones. Yours was one of them, as evidenced by the consensus you gathered.
Although you have come off the shortlist, we think your presence at the TAG Heuer VELAFestival and the Sailor of the Year Evening would be an excellent opportunity to make your thoughts known even more. People are just waiting to see you live.
Good Wind,
The Editors of the Sailing Newspaper
