That our sea is full of plastic to Stefano Rossini (journalist), Matteo and Pietro Munaretto (radio TV technician and municipal police officer, respectively) just doesn’t go down well. So, passionate sailors that they are, they decided to turn it–into a sailboat.
“We are doing a nonprofit project,” they told us, “to raise awareness of the problem of disposable plastic and its dispersal in the sea called ‘Plastic Sickness.’ We thought we would treat this very important issue with a lot of irony and a crazy venture.”
What does it consist of? “To build a catamaran of about six by three meters entirely out of recycled materials, mainly plastic bottles collected by pupils of some elementary schools in the Rimini area, who will receive an aluminum water bottle in return.” The intention is to sail the catamaran from Rimini to Venice this summer on a 95-mile route.
“The boat will be propelled by a sail, an electric motor and a pedal system. All video footage of the construction, trip and events will be collected to make a documentary. All navigation will take place close to the coast to be more visible and to allow anyone to join us by swimming, boat or paddle boat to become a kind of sea caravan sensitive to the issue at hand. The trip will take about four and will have no stops (barring unforeseen circumstances).
