It is called the Scrooge Scrooge Trophy, “the regatta for rich champions” as the slogan of the event scheduled to take place in Venice on Oct. 23-24. It says on the organization’s website, “You don’t have to be a sailing expert to participate, just wealthy and competitive.”
Better yet, the event is open only to wealthy “laymen,” a maximum of 20: “Both sexes who are 25 years of age or older, have never participated in sailing competitions, and have no sailing experience are eligible to apply. Registration has a lump sum cost of 150 thousand euros including vat per participant and accompanying person all inclusive. Excludes cost of travel to Venice stations/airport, personal purchases not included in the event.”
Just put the “big bucks” on the plate and the organizers (Viptur, a brand of Seca Security Cash Sagl a Swiss company of the Samarcanda Group) provide cruising boats(Elan Impression 45, Hanse 445 and Bavaria 46 Cruiser), crew and accommodations in the very luxurious Venetian Cipriani hotel.
In fact, the days leading up to the regatta on Oct. 24 will be devoted to lessons at sea to get the wealthy boat owners “familiar” with the race, while the actual regatta will be on Sunday. Each day, participants will experience the city as VIPs by visiting exclusive places and dining at the best restaurants. At 7:30 p.m. on Sunday the awards ceremony, then the gala dinner on two Venetian galleons!
