Falls off boat in Pacific, saves himself by inflating his jeans with air. This is how he did it

arne murke
A sudden bombshell, and he found himself in the water off the New Zealand coast of Gisborne
: Arne Murke, a 30-year-old German sailor, was transferring with his brother the 12-meter sailboat Wahoo from New Zealand to Brazil). At first he got his arm caught under the hull, then he could not reach the life jacket his brother had thrown him: the current and three-meter waves swept him away.

SAVED BY JEANS
Murke did not lose heart. He remembered a technique employed by the Navy Seals, the U.S. Special Forces: he knotted the ends of his jeans and inflated them, turning them into a life jacket. He told the New Zealand Herald, “I’ve seen it done a long time ago, and I’ve always thought, if I ever go overboard without a life jacket, I’ll do it.”

In the meantime, Arne’s brother alerted help, and a Hawke’s Bay Rescue helicopter was able to locate and retrieve him, three hours after he fell into the water. The ruse Murke used kept him afloat by preventing him from straining and the risk of letting go due to exhaustion: “I was underwater and I was thinking … do it for your daughter! Hang in there,” he said.

HOW TO MAKE A JACKET FROM YOUR OWN JEANS

The German stated that he was scared but would not stop sailing. Experience has taught him to pay more attention, and he will certainly not forget to attach himself to the jack line in the next long sailings.
