From the series…don’t call it a daysailer
. The beautiful story Lorenzo Camillo tells us. demonstrates how even with a small (but well-built and equipped) boat like the Saffier SC 8m, it is possible to complete, in total tranquility and even solo, real long cruises, averaging 30 miles a day. Here is what Lorenzo, a real estate agent, just turned 74, writes.

FROM LIGURIA TO SARDINIA ON A SAFFIER SC8

I tell you about my little adventure of solo transfer with new boat from Liguria to Sardinia in these winter days.

I chose to buy a small 8-meter sailboat (Saffier SC8, name is Mabi 3) so that I could enjoy the sea even in winter, to go out alone on those beautiful sunny Sardinian days that happen often. My choice fell on a Dutch shipyard, Saffier, whose owners, as it happens, grew up in Sydney, Australia.

On another special note, a Sardinian boy, Jarno, from Sassari-Alghero, worked on my boat in that boatyard: I was later told that he got excited when he saw it leave for his land. The boat was delivered to me on Feb. 6 in Varazze near Savona, and from there I took it down myself.” End of story. He keeps it simple, Lorenzo.

Then he adds, “Technical note for sailors: the boat is equipped with all the tools and equipment that facilitate safe sailing and include autopilot, self-tacking jib, electric winch, reefs (sail reduction) deferred in the cockpit, etc.”

We also noticed a wraparound sprayhood, which is very rare on small daysailers, but in this case more than functional for winter and solo sailing.

I have added another technological first never seen on small boats, the jetthruster, a water jet that allows the boat to turn on itself, useful for docking in crosswinds, which I hope will allow me to continue using the boat in my old age.

To sleep during this sailing I alternated on berths in the boat and in B&Bs in some ports.”

Finally, the balance of the adventure: “Distance traveled 300 Miles, departure February 7 with arrival in Porto Cervo on the 18th, with one day stopped in La Spezia due to bad weather. Average of 30 Miles per day with the longest leg, Porto Taverna/Campoloro – Porto Vecchio (Corsica) 50 Miles.”
