Be honest, how many of you would have bet that Dan Lenard, a superyacht designer and the face of a Hollywood star rather than a rugged sea dog, would manage to cross the ocean alone and with nothing (no instruments, compasses, gps, engine. Nothing!)?

Instead, by bringing to the table his vast (and to most unknown) experience as a sailor, Dan pulled it off. On his 10-meter “frankenstein” Scia, the boat he made by assembling pieces of boats at least a decade old, he traveled 4,800 miles from Cadiz, Spain, to Fort Lauderdale, USA, with one stop in Antigua.
In this nice interview he had told us how he managed to navigate without instruments (using only his marine watch) and especially-this is the real difficulty-without autopilot.

Her sailing began in Cadiz on January 20.
, a place of special importance for those sailing in the Atlantic, frequented by the Phoenicians and Romans on their route to Britain, was the port of departure for Christopher Columbus on his second and fourth sail to the “Mundus Novus” as Amerigo Vespucci successfully called it.

Dan wanted to give this undertaking a special content:
co-founder of the Nuvolari Lenard studio well known in the nautical world for being one of the designers who sign the world’s most important boats, mega and gigayachts, wanted to enter the role of a sailor who without too many resources except his skill and a boat crosses the Atlantic.

He succeeded although with great effort and great slowness due to the lack of wind, even helming for ten twelve hours a day: “helming and understanding how I could manage the boat in sail changes allowed me a great awareness of what I was doing and to be certain that my destiny was in my own hands.”
