Many times there is an invisible barrier that limits participation in regattas/sailing events: regatta rules. But that’s not the case at the TAG Heuer VELA Cup. And that’s why it’s the most crowded, fun, easy sailing/racing on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It takes place on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 in front of Santa Margherita Ligure/Portofino in conjunction with the TAG Heuer VELAFestival.

In this not-to-be-missed event for those who love sailing, it is not the complicated rules of racing that are in effect, but the regulations on collisions at sea, those rules we use every day at sea.

ONLY RULES OF COMMON SENSE AND RESPECT
Everything is easier within the reach of any fan with respect to fair play and sportsmanship. A few examples from the TAG Heuer VELA Cup instructions:

– Boats sailing starboard tack will always take precedence over those sailing port tack.

– A boat sailing upwind of another will always have to keep clear of the downwind boat

– Boats that are between a buoy or obstacle or between other boats have the right of space to pass or tack or gybe if this maneuver is necessary. However, it is forbidden to wedge between one buoy or obstacle and another or other boats when within 100 meters of the buoy or obstacle.

– When safety reasons require a close hauled boat to make a substantial course change to avoid an obstacle and it intends to tack but cannot do so without colliding with another boat,
it must give a call to have space for such a maneuver; before tacking it must give the called boat time to respond.

– The ‘use of motor propulsion is allowed until the hoisting of the preparatory signal (5 minutes from the start). It is permitted to keep the engines running without gear engaged (for safety reasons), until the ‘lowering of the preparatory signal (1 minute from the start) after which the engines should be turned off.

We are talking about common sense rules. So: more sailing for everyone at the TAG Heuer VELA Cup!
